Description

From one of Franken’s classic Silvaner specialists, Weingut Giegerich Silvaner Schalk 2022 captures the purity and precision that have made this grape the region’s hallmark. Sourced from the esteemed Schalk vineyard near the village of Rück, this wine unites old vines, mineral-rich sandstone soils and thoughtful craftsmanship in the cellar. It is a beautifully focused, terroir-driven Silvaner that shows how refined and characterful this often-understated variety can be.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Silvaner presents a pale to medium straw-yellow hue with delicate green reflections, hinting at its freshness and vitality. The nose is finely etched and expressive, offering aromas of crisp green and yellow apple, pear skin, and white peach, layered with subtle notes of fresh herbs, meadow flowers, and a distinct stony, flinty minerality. On the palate, it is taut and precise rather than broad or heavy, showing a lively tension that reflects its old vines and poor, weathered sandstone soils. Expect a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that frames flavors of orchard fruit, citrus zest and a gentle, savory herbal tone, all supported by a saline, mineral backbone. The alcohol is beautifully integrated, giving the wine a sense of lift and drinkability rather than weight. This is a Silvaner that drinks wonderfully young for its energy and clarity, but it also has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years, gaining more texture and complexity while maintaining its freshness.

Production
The Schalk vineyard, lying near the village of Rück between Großwallstadt and Klingenberg, is one of the pride sites of the Giegerich family. Here, Silvaner vines over 45 years old plunge their roots deep into sparse, weathered Buntsandstein (colored sandstone) soils, which naturally restrict vigor and enhance concentration and minerality in the grapes. In warm and relatively dry vintages such as 2022, these resilient, deep-rooted vines are particularly adept at producing wines with tension and verve. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand with strict selection to capture perfect ripeness and avoid overripe, heavy fruit. After harvest, fermentation and maturation take place in large, used wooden casks, allowing a gentle micro-oxygenation and textural refinement without imparting dominant oak flavors, thus preserving the clarity of the terroir and the variety.

Food & Serving
This Silvaner is a versatile food partner, especially well-suited to fine, nuanced dishes rather than overly powerful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with freshwater fish, trout or pike-perch, light poultry, veal schnitzel, seasonal asparagus, and a range of vegetable-focused dishes such as herb-infused risottos or roasted root vegetables. It also complements mild soft cheeses and young, not-too-pungent washed-rind cheeses. Serve well-chilled but not ice-cold, ideally at 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow its aromatics and texture to unfold. Decanting is generally not necessary, but pouring it into a slightly larger white wine glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help the wine open up and show its full mineral and herbal complexity.

Producer
Weingut Giegerich is a family-run estate in Franken where Silvaner has long played a central, defining role. In this classic German region, the winery has built its reputation on crafting Silvaner across all quality tiers, from estate wines to distinctive single-vineyard bottlings. The Schalk site in Rück counts among the family’s greatest assets and deepest sources of pride, showcasing both the age of their vines and the character of their sandstone soils. Through meticulous vineyard work, selective hand harvesting and sensitive aging in large, seasoned wooden casks, Weingut Giegerich has become a respected name in Franken for wines that honor regional tradition while expressing precision, freshness and a clear sense of place.
