Description
Weingut Eymann Spätburgunder Mandelgarten 2019 is a refined, Burgundian‑inspired Pinot Noir from the lesser‑known Pfalz village of Gönnheim, a little further out toward the Rhine plain. Sourced from the loess-rich Mandelgarten vineyard and planted at very high density, it delivers remarkable finesse, precision and depth for its category. Drawing on massale selections from the Côte d’Or, this cuvée bridges classic German clarity with the complexity and spice more often associated with top Burgundy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Mandelgarten Spätburgunder shows a translucent ruby to garnet hue with brilliant clarity and a delicate rim. The nose opens with an immediately enticing, peppery spice – notes of pimento and clove – wrapped around a core of dark, ripe berry fruit. Layers of black cherry, blackberry and mulberry mingle with subtle earthy nuances of dried leaves and forest floor, adding a quietly autumnal complexity.
On the palate, the wine is classically Pinot: slender, focused and finely etched rather than broad or heavy. A vivid, juicy cherry fruit character comes to the fore, supported by darker berry tones and that same spicy, slightly smoky nuance from the nose. The acidity is finely chiselled and almost “dancing” on the tongue, lending lift and a sense of energy that underscores the wine’s elegance. Tannins are fine-grained and well-integrated, guiding a long, sapid finish that lingers with cherry, spice and gentle earth. Enjoyable now for its precision and freshness, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining further tertiary complexity.
Production
The Mandelgarten vineyard in Gönnheim sits slightly down toward the Rhine plain from the more renowned Mittelhaardt sites, on soils dominated by löss (loess) that lend both finesse and a supple texture to the wine. Weingut Eymann has planted this parcel at a dense 10,000 vines per hectare, using massale selections from the Côte d’Or rather than clonal material, to capture greater diversity and complexity in the fruit. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, with bunches brought to the cellar in small containers to preserve integrity. Fermentation is carried out with a gentle touch to respect the delicacy of Spätburgunder – often with a proportion of whole berries, moderate extraction and careful temperature control – followed by élevage in wooden barrels that adds subtle spice and structure without overwhelming the varietal purity. The result is a wine that clearly reflects its loess-driven terroir and Burgundian heritage in both texture and aromatic profile.
Food & Serving
This Spätburgunder is a versatile partner at the table, particularly suited to refined, subtly flavoured dishes. Pair it with roast poultry (especially duck or guinea fowl), veal schnitzel, pork tenderloin, or herb-crusted lamb, as well as classic German fare like mushroom dishes, game bird, or mildly spiced sausages. It also shines with earthy vegetarian plates featuring lentils, roasted root vegetables, or wild mushrooms. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic nuance and brisk acidity. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the spice and dark fruit to fully unfurl, while older bottles can simply be opened and allowed to breathe in the glass.
