Description
Walter Scott’s Cuvée Ruth Pinot Noir 2022 is a beautifully layered Willamette Valley bottling that captures the elegance and precision Oregon Pinot Noir is known for. Made from fruit sourced from some of the region’s most respected vineyards, it delivers depth, perfume, and a Burgundian sense of finesse in a very limited production.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a vivid, Burgundy-like hue that hints at its refined style. The nose opens with dark fruit, earthy nuance, licorice, rose petals, and a lift of white pepper, giving it both perfume and complexity.
On the palate, dark cherry and blackberry lead the way, followed by notes of cherry cola, cranberry, orange peel, and a subtle touch of oak. The wine finishes long and spicy, with fresh, balanced acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. It can be enjoyed now, but it also has the structure to develop nicely over the next few years.
Production
This Pinot Noir is a blend of clones from several top Willamette Valley sites, including Freedom Hill, Clos de Oiseaux, Bieze, and Eola Springs Vineyards in Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills and surrounding areas. The vineyards benefit from the region’s cool-climate conditions, which help preserve freshness, aromatics, and natural acidity. Fermentation was carried out with native yeast, and the wine was aged for 12 months in French oak, including 30% new barrels, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs especially well with roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon, or earthy dishes featuring truffle, root vegetables, or wild mushrooms. Serve it slightly cool, around 15–16°C, and consider a short decant if opening it young to let the aromatics fully open.
Producer
Walter Scott is a highly regarded Oregon producer known for focused, site-driven wines that emphasize purity, balance, and tension. Founded by husband-and-wife team Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon, the winery has become an important name in the Willamette Valley, particularly for its expressive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Walter Scott has earned a strong reputation among collectors and wine lovers for crafting small-production wines with impressive precision and consistency.
