Description

The 1997 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru from Domaine Comtes Lafon is a fine example of Volnay at its most graceful: perfumed, finely textured, and quietly powerful. From one of the village’s most respected premier cru sites and one of Burgundy’s benchmark domaines, this wine combines elegance with depth in a style that has long made Volnay a reference point for Pinot Noir lovers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this should show a translucent ruby hue with the gentle evolution expected from mature Burgundy. On the nose, Clos des Chênes often offers lifted aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, dried rose petals, forest floor, and subtle spice, with age bringing notes of sous-bois, mushroom, and tea leaves. On the palate, it is typically refined rather than overtly muscular, with silky tannins, bright acidity, and a layered red-fruit core that can soften into earthy, savory complexity with bottle age. The 1997 vintage may now be at a beautiful plateau, with tertiary nuance adding finesse and charm. Well-stored bottles may still drink well for some time, though the wine is likely in its mature window now.

Production
Clos des Chênes is one of Volnay’s most prized premier cru climats, known for producing wines with both perfume and structure from limestone and clay soils that lend tension and definition. Domaine Comtes Lafon is renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, including careful harvesting by hand and a philosophy aimed at preserving site expression and balance. Vinification in Burgundy typically emphasizes gentle extraction and thoughtful élevage in oak, allowing the character of the vineyard and vintage to remain at the forefront.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with dishes that echo its elegance and subtle earthiness, such as roast duck, quail, mushroom tart, veal, or braised chicken with morels. It also works well with soft-rind cheeses and refined game dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting gently for 30–60 minutes if the bottle is showing youthful restraint or light reduction; older bottles should be handled carefully and decanted only if necessary.

Producer
Domaine Comtes Lafon is one of Burgundy’s most respected estates, especially celebrated for its work in Meursault and for producing wines of purity, precision, and longevity. Under the leadership of Dominique Lafon in the modern era, the domaine became widely admired for its biodynamic approach and its consistently high standards in both vineyard and cellar. Its reputation in Burgundy is exceptional, and bottles from the estate are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
