Description
Vincent Dancer Beaune 1er Cru Montrevenots 2016 is a refined, terroir-driven red Burgundy from one of the most admired minimalist winemakers in the Côte d’Or. This Premier Cru site, perched on the slopes above Beaune near Pommard, is known for producing Pinot Noir with both finesse and structure. The 2016 vintage, marked by low yields but excellent concentration, delivers a wine that beautifully balances Burgundian elegance with pure, unforced fruit expression.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Beaune Montrevenots 2016 shows a luminous medium ruby color with delicate garnet highlights at the rim, signalling the beginning of graceful evolution. The nose is precise and lifted: red cherries, wild strawberries and cranberry are layered with rose petals, a hint of raspberry leaf, subtle spice, and a gentle mineral/rocky note that speaks clearly of its hillside origin.
On the palate, this is finely etched and energetic rather than opulent. Juicy red berry fruit and morello cherry are supported by a vibrant line of acidity and ultra-fine, chalky tannins. There is a subtle savory side—dried herbs, a touch of black tea, and forest floor—adding complexity without heaviness. The finish is long, saline and mouthwatering, inviting another sip. Drinking beautifully now with a short decant, this 2016 has the structure and freshness to evolve gracefully for another 6–8 years from now, gaining more aromatic nuance and silky texture.
Production
Montrevenots is a high-lying Premier Cru on the Beaune side of the hill, with thin, limestone-rich soils and good drainage, giving naturally low yields and an emphasis on tension and minerality rather than weight. Vincent Dancer is known for organic, thoughtful vineyard work, favoring manual cultivation, restricted yields and careful selection at harvest, typically picking by hand to preserve fruit integrity and optimal ripeness. In the cellar, his approach is deliberately low-intervention: gentle handling of the grapes, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, moderate extraction to keep tannins fine, and élevage in carefully chosen French oak barrels (with a restrained use of new wood) to frame, rather than dominate, the purity of the Pinot Noir and the character of this Premier Cru hillside terroir.
Food & Serving
This Beaune 1er Cru is a versatile partner at the table, ideal with classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin, roast chicken with thyme, duck breast, or rabbit with mustard. It also shines alongside veal, pork tenderloin, mushroom-based dishes, and semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C; a light chill helps emphasize its freshness and precision. Decant for 30–45 minutes before serving to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl and the tannins to relax, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Domaine Vincent Dancer is a small, highly regarded estate based in Chassagne-Montrachet, renowned among Burgundy enthusiasts for its precise, transparent wines and its quiet but uncompromising philosophy. Founded in the 1990s when Vincent took over family holdings and began bottling under his own name, the domaine has gradually earned a cult following for both its whites and reds, thanks to meticulous vineyard work and a restrained, terroir-first approach in the cellar. Working largely organically and with a strong environmental awareness, Dancer has become a benchmark in the southern Côte de Beaune for those seeking Burgundy that is both classically rooted and resolutely modern in its purity, clarity, and respect for site—qualities clearly on display in his Beaune Montrevenots 2016.
