Description

Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero 1982 is a benchmark bottle from one of Barolo’s most revered producers and one of Castiglione Falletto’s most celebrated crus. Crafted from old-vine Nebbiolo and aged for decades, it shows how great Barolo can evolve into something profoundly complex, graceful and deeply expressive. From the exceptional 1982 vintage, this Riserva captures a perfect balance of power, elegance and mature nuance that serious collectors and enthusiasts seek out.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a deep garnet core with pronounced brick-orange reflections at the rim, a classic sign of beautifully aged Barolo. The nose is intensely complex and constantly evolving, with layers of dried roses, sour cherry and red currant, joined by balsamic tones, leather, undergrowth, porcini mushroom, truffle, tobacco leaf and a subtle hint of menthol and spice. On the palate, the wine is remarkably harmonious for its age: the once-firm Nebbiolo tannins have melted into a silky, fine-grained texture, supported by a still-vibrant acidity that keeps everything fresh and lifted. Flavours of mature red berries, dried cherry and blood orange are interwoven with earthy notes, savory herbs, licorice, tobacco, cedar and delicate spice. The finish is impressively long, refined and persistent, with lingering floral and truffle notes. Well-stored bottles of this 1982 Riserva remain at or near their peak, with the potential to hold and offer pleasure for several more years, though it is very much in its optimal drinking window now.

Production
The grapes for Barolo Riserva Villero 1982 come from old Nebbiolo vines rooted in the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto, a hillside vineyard prized for its calcareous marl soils mixed with clay and sand. This terroir gives wines of substantial structure, finesse and marked mineral backbone. Fruit was harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches were selected. Vietti’s traditional Barolo approach was followed: a long maceration and fermentation in stainless steel to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity, followed by approximately 36 months of aging in large Slavonian oak casks. After cask maturation, the wine spent many additional years resting in bottle before release as a Riserva, allowing its structure and aromatics to knit together into a seamless whole.

Food & Serving
This mature Barolo Riserva is a superb companion to classic Piedmontese dishes and refined, earthy cuisine. Pair it with white truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, braised veal or beef (such as brasato al Barolo), game dishes, roasted lamb, porcini or truffle-based preparations, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or hard alpine cheeses. Serve at around 16 °C, allowing the bottle to come slowly to temperature after gentle removal from the cellar. Decant carefully for 30–60 minutes to separate any sediment and let the wine open up, but avoid overly aggressive aeration to preserve its delicate, mature bouquet.

Producer
Vietti is one of the historic and most influential names in Barolo, based in Castiglione Falletto in the heart of Piemonte. The family has been making wine here for generations, and was among the pioneers of single-vineyard Barolo bottlings, helping to define the modern understanding of crus such as Villero, Rocche and Brunate. Vietti’s style marries a deep respect for traditional methods—long macerations, aging in large casks—with meticulous vineyard work and an unwavering focus on expressing terroir. The estate’s Barolos are consistently among the most sought-after wines of the region, frequently earning top scores and international acclaim, and their Riservas from great vintages like 1982 are regarded as true classics in the canon of Piedmontese wine.
