Description
Vietti’s Barbera d’Alba Vigna Vecchia Scarrone 2022 is a standout expression of old-vine Barbera from one of Piedmont’s most respected producers. Sourced from the historic Scarrone vineyard, it combines the grape’s vivid freshness with remarkable depth, precision, and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a bright, concentrated ruby-purple color. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe cherry, blackberry, violet, and subtle spice, often framed by a refined mineral edge and hints of oak spice.
The palate is juicy and energetic, with Barbera’s signature high acidity giving lift to the generous red and dark berry fruit. Expect a supple, polished texture, well-integrated tannins, and a long, savory finish. While enjoyable young for its vibrant fruit, this wine has the structure and concentration to develop well over the next several years.
Production
Vigna Vecchia Scarrone comes from old vines in the Scarrone vineyard in Barbera d’Alba, an area known for producing wines with both intensity and balance. The vineyard’s Piedmontese terroir, with its mix of clay-limestone soils and favorable exposure, helps preserve freshness while building ripeness and complexity. The wine is crafted with careful fermentation and élevage designed to emphasize purity of fruit, structure, and elegance.
Food & Serving
This Barbera is a natural partner for rich Italian dishes such as pasta with ragù, braised meats, roasted poultry, and mushroom-based plates. It also works beautifully with aged cheeses and charcuterie. Serve slightly cool, ideally around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if opening it young to allow the aromatics to open fully.
Producer
Vietti is one of Piedmont’s most admired wineries, with a long history of producing wines that balance tradition and meticulous craftsmanship. Based in Castiglione Falletto, the estate has helped define the modern reputation of the region through its focus on single-vineyard bottlings and site-driven expressions. Vietti is widely respected for its consistency, quality, and influence across both Barolo and broader Piedmontese winemaking.
