Description

Velich Chardonnay Tiglat 2022 is one of Austria’s benchmark Chardonnays, a cult white from the eastern shores of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. Sourced from old vines planted in 1959, this is a deeply expressive, terroir-driven wine that has helped put Austrian Chardonnay on the international map. Once styled in a richer, barrique-heavy fashion, Tiglat has evolved into a wine of precision, depth and salinity, offering Burgundy-level complexity with a distinctly Austrian character.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 shows a vibrant, dense straw-yellow colour with golden highlights, hinting at concentration and time on lees. The nose is layered and constantly evolving in the glass: ripe golden apple and yellow plum intertwine with notes of pineapple and citrus zest, supported by hints of toasted hazelnut, lightly buttered brioche, white blossom and a fine, stony minerality. With air, more nuanced aromas emerge—subtle spice, orange peel and a whisper of honey. On the palate, Tiglat 2022 is both powerful and finely cut: medium to full-bodied, with a silky texture balanced by precise, mouth-watering acidity. Ripe orchard and stone fruits are wrapped in a savoury, mineral backbone, with discreet, well-integrated oak adding structure rather than weight. The finish is long and persistent, echoing citrus, saline notes and delicate spice. While already approachable in its youth, the wine has excellent aging potential; 8–12 years from vintage is realistic, with further complexity developing over time for those who are patient.

Production
Tiglat comes from a small, prized parcel near Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, where the warm Pannonian climate meets the moderating influence of the water. The old Chardonnay vines, planted in 1959 after a serendipitous mix-up with Weißburgunder cuttings, grow on well-drained, calcareous and gravelly soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. Harvest is typically done by hand, with meticulous selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes in the vineyard. In the cellar, Velich works with a minimalist, low-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and élevage in wooden barrels (predominantly used barrique and/or larger oak) on the lees for an extended period. The aim is not to imprint oak, but to frame the terroir, enhance texture and build complexity, resulting in a Chardonnay that is both profound and transparent to its origin.

Food & Serving
Chardonnay Tiglat 2022 is a superb partner for refined, flavourful cuisine. Think roasted or grilled white fish, turbot or halibut with beurre blanc, lobster or scallops, and richly sauced poultry such as roast chicken or guinea fowl. It also shines with veal, mushroom dishes, truffled pasta, creamy risottos and aged Alpine cheeses. Serve at 10–12 °C to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to let the wine breathe and reveal its full complexity; in older bottles, a gentle, shorter decant is sufficient to separate any sediment and open the bouquet.

Producer
Weingut Velich is a family-run estate in Apetlon, Burgenland, renowned as one of Austria’s leading addresses for serious, age-worthy white wines. Founded by the Velich family and now widely respected among sommeliers and collectors, the estate was catapulted to international recognition through Chardonnay Tiglat—a wine that, from its early vintages, challenged expectations of what Austrian Chardonnay could be. Located near Lake Neusiedl, Velich has become a reference point for terroir-driven, low-intervention winemaking in the region, focusing on expressing the unique interplay of warm Pannonian climate and cooling lake influences. Over the years, the winery has earned a loyal following and frequent critical acclaim for producing Chardonnays that stand comfortably alongside top examples from the world’s classic regions while remaining unmistakably Burgenland in identity.
