Description
Velenosi Ludi 2002 is a flagship red from Italy’s Marche region, crafted to showcase how local terroir can elevate an ambitious, modern blend. Marrying Montepulciano with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it delivers depth, structure and polish in equal measure. In a vintage that was challenging across much of Italy, Ludi 2002 stands out as a carefully curated success story and a benchmark wine for Marche Rosso IGT.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Ludi 2002 shows a deep garnet core with brick-rimmed hues, reflecting its extended bottle age yet still retaining impressive color density. The nose is complex and evolving, with layered aromas of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum, intertwined with dried tobacco, cedar, leather, sweet spice and hints of dark chocolate and roasted coffee from its time in French oak.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, concentrated wine with a silk-smooth texture and finely woven tannins. The dark fruit profile—blackberry, cassis and macerated cherry—is supported by a lively, still-present acidity that keeps the wine fresh despite its maturity. Notes of cocoa, espresso, vanilla and subtle smoke merge with a savory, mineral edge, leading into a long, persistent finish. Already in a beautiful drinking window after more than two decades, Ludi 2002 can continue to evolve for another 5–8 years under proper cellaring, gaining further tertiary complexity while gradually softening its structure.
Production
Ludi 2002 is sourced from hillside vineyards in the Piceno area of southern Marche, where calcareous and clay-rich soils give both backbone and depth to the fruit. The vines are conventionally farmed with meticulous, selective harvesting to ensure only the best clusters of Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot reach the winery. After gentle destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, followed by an extended maceration to maximize color, flavor and tannin extraction. The wine is then aged for around 18–24 months in predominantly new French oak barriques, which lend notes of vanilla, chocolate and toasted coffee, before an additional period of bottle aging to allow the blend to harmonize before release.
Food & Serving
This mature, structured Marche Rosso pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game stews and roasted pork with herbs. It also works well alongside aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino, and truffle-infused dishes that echo the wine’s earthy, tertiary notes. Serve at around 18 °C, ideally after decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften. Use large Bordeaux-style glasses to showcase its aromatic complexity and texture.
