Description

Van Volxem Altenberg Alte Reben GG 2020 is a striking dry Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most revered steep-slate vineyards. Sourced from old vines (“Alte Reben”) on the famed Altenberg site, this Grosses Gewächs marries crystalline precision with impressive depth and intensity. It’s a wine that showcases how Mosel Riesling can be both filigreed and powerful, with a profile that will appeal to serious collectors and adventurous white wine lovers alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Altenberg Alte Reben GG is clear and bright, with a pale straw to light lemon hue that hints at its youth and vibrancy. The nose is fresh, focused and incredibly pure: concentrated citrus and stone fruit are wrapped in smoky, flinty minerality, with distinct notes of crushed slate, wet stone and a subtle herbal lift. On the palate, it is silk-smooth and crystalline, with a juicy, mouthwatering core of ripe citrus, white peach and green apple framed by a firm, salty-mineral backbone. Despite its intensity, the wine feels almost weightless, with a very fine, filigree structure and perfectly integrated acidity that drives a long, aromatic and saliva-inducing finish. The finesse and balance suggest excellent aging potential; stored well, this 2020 should continue to develop added complexity and tertiary notes over 10–15 years, and likely beyond.

Production
Altenberg is one of the Mosel’s classic steep-slope vineyards, dominated by poor, stony slate soils that force the old Riesling vines to dig deep, yielding low quantities of highly concentrated fruit. The cool Mosel climate and the site’s slope and exposure create a long growing season, allowing slow, even ripening and a remarkable expression of minerality. Grapes for this Grosses Gewächs are typically hand-harvested in small batches to ensure optimal ripeness and selection, especially important on such challenging terrain. In the cellar, Van Volxem favors a gentle, non-interventionist approach: careful pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and aging on the fine lees—often in stainless steel and large neutral oak—help preserve the vineyard character, enhance texture and bring both clarity and depth to the final wine.

Food & Serving
This Altenberg Alte Reben GG is a highly versatile gastronomic wine, ideal with refined seafood dishes such as scallops, turbot, langoustines or poached sole, as well as sushi, sashimi and high-quality oysters. It also shines alongside subtly spiced Asian cuisine, fine poultry, veal in light cream sauces, or vegetable-driven dishes with fennel, asparagus or citrus accents. Serve chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F) to allow the aromatics to fully open. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter or large-bowled glass to soften the structure and reveal the wine’s full finesse and mineral complexity.

Producer
Van Volxem, based in the Saar, a key sub-region of the Mosel, has become one of Germany’s benchmark producers for terroir-driven Riesling. The estate’s roots go back to the 19th century, when its vineyards were already counted among the most prized in Europe, supplying wines to prestigious cellars across the continent. Under modern stewardship, Van Volxem has focused on reclaiming historic, often steep and hard-to-farm slate sites, many planted with old vines, and vinifying them with meticulous care and minimal intervention. Today, the estate is widely regarded as a standard-bearer for dry and Grosses Gewächs Rieslings from the Mosel-Saar, regularly receiving critical acclaim for the precision, purity and age-worthiness of its wines.
