Description
Van Volxem Altenberg Alte Reben GG 2019 is a powerful, dry Mosel Riesling from one of the region’s most dramatic steep-slope grand cru sites. Sourced from old vines (“Alte Reben”) on the famed Altenberg vineyard, it captures Mosel’s crystalline precision in a richer, more structured style. This bottling has rapidly gained a reputation as one of the standout dry Rieslings of the Saar/Mosel, firmly establishing Altenberg among the elite grand cru vineyards of the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Altenberg Alte Reben GG is bright and luminous, with a pale straw to light lemon hue that hints at both youth and intensity. The nose is immediately complex and terroir-driven: concentrated citrus notes—think lemon chutney and preserved lemon—interlace with finely crushed slate, flint-like minerality and a whisper of smoky stone. With air, subtle herbal nuances and a cool, stony freshness emerge, underlining the wine’s depth.
On the palate, this is at once round, precise and energetic. A vibrant, zesty acidity runs through the core of ripe citrus and stone fruit, balanced by a juicy, almost playful mid-palate texture. The minerality is finely etched and crystalline, giving the wine great tension and clarity while remaining elegant and refined. The finish is tight, long and intensely saline-mineral, promising significant aging potential. While already impressive in its youth, this 2019 is built to evolve gracefully over 10–15+ years, gaining further complexity, depth and harmony.
Production
The Altenberg vineyard is a spectacularly steep, south- to south-west-facing slope in the Saar/Mosel, dominated by weathered slate soils that impart precision, salinity and a flinty, smoky character to the Riesling. Old vines dig deep into the poor, stony ground, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. Van Volxem works with meticulous, predominantly manual vineyard practices on this demanding terrain, ensuring optimal ripeness while preserving freshness. Harvesting is done by hand, often in successive passes, to select only perfectly healthy and ripe grapes. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with a gentle, low-intervention philosophy: careful pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and extended maturation on fine lees in large traditional vessels help to capture both the intensity of old vines and the finesse of this grand cru slate terroir. The result is an “Grosses Gewächs” Riesling that is dry, precise and profoundly mineral.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic dry Riesling that pairs beautifully with refined, flavorful dishes. Think shellfish and crustaceans (lobster, langoustines, scallops), high-quality white fish, sushi and sashimi, or delicately spiced Asian cuisine with ginger, lemongrass or light curry notes. It also complements poultry in creamy sauces, veal, and sophisticated vegetable dishes featuring fennel, asparagus or root vegetables. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics and minerality to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to open up the bouquet and soften the structure; older bottles can simply be gently poured and enjoyed as they unfold in the glass.
Producer
Van Volxem, based in Wiltingen on the Saar, has become one of Germany’s benchmark estates for dry, terroir-driven Rieslings. The estate’s roots go back to the 19th century, when its vineyards were already ranked among the finest along the Mosel and Saar and its wines were poured at top tables across Europe. Since Roman Niewodniczanski took over and, together with winemaker Dominik Völk, began revitalizing historic grand cru sites, Van Volxem has been instrumental in re-establishing the Saar as a source of world-class, dry Riesling. Their focus on old vines, steep-slope slate parcels and a precise, minimal-intervention style has garnered critical acclaim and positioned the Altenberg Alte Reben GG as one of the flagships of modern Mosel/Saar winemaking.
