Description
Vadio Vinho Tinto GRANDE VADIO 2014 is a refined expression of Portugal’s characterful Baga grape, crafted to show the variety at full maturity rather than in its famously austere youth. Sourced from prime hillside parcels in Bairrada and aged patiently, this flagship cuvée offers the depth, structure and complexity that Baga lovers seek, yet in an unusually accessible and polished style. It’s a wine that bridges tradition and modern sensibility, honoring Bairrada’s heritage while proving just how elegant this native grape can become with time and careful handling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, GRANDE VADIO 2014 presents a deep garnet core with a brick-red rim, hinting at its evolution and bottle age. The nose is intense and layered, with dark red and black berry fruit—cassis, blackberry and morello cherry—woven together with floral notes of violets, dried roses, and subtle hints of leather, tobacco leaf and smoldering embers. A gentle touch of spice and a whisper of forest floor add further complexity as the wine opens.
On the palate, this Baga is full-bodied yet remarkably poised. The once-grippy tannins have begun to melt into a finer, more velvety texture, framing generous fruit without losing the grape’s hallmark freshness. Juicy cassis and redcurrant are joined by notes of black tea, cocoa nib, cedar and a smoky, savory edge. The lively acidity keeps everything taut and vibrant, giving the wine real energy and length. Already very approachable for a Baga of this age, it still has the structure to evolve further over the next 8–10 years, gaining more tertiary nuances of truffle, dried herbs and cured meat.
Production
The grapes for GRANDE VADIO 2014 come from select sloping vineyards in Bairrada, a coastal region in central Portugal characterized by its cool Atlantic influence and predominantly clay-limestone (‘barro’) soils. These well-draining, mineral-rich parcels allow Baga to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving acidity while building depth and tannic structure. The fruit is typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to balance Baga’s natural vigor and acidity, and carefully sorted to include only the finest bunches. Fermentation tends to be traditional and gentle, often in small vats, with careful extraction to tame the grape’s naturally firm tannins. The wine is then aged in a combination of used oak barrels and bottle, allowing the robust young Baga to shed its angularity and develop the complex, savory character and polished texture that define GRANDE VADIO.
Food & Serving
This is a superb gastronomic wine, ideally suited to richly flavored dishes and classic Portuguese cuisine. It pairs beautifully with Bairrada’s iconic leitão assado (roast suckling pig), slow-roasted pork shoulder, duck rice, braised lamb shanks, game birds, and hearty stews with beans or chorizo. Mature hard cheeses and aged cow or sheep’s milk cheeses also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to fully unfurl the wine’s aromatic layers and soften the remaining tannic grip.
Producer
Vadio is a small, quality-driven project in Bairrada, founded with the clear mission of preserving and elevating the region’s traditional grape varieties, especially Baga. Working with old vines and distinctive terroirs, Vadio focuses on minimal intervention and precise, thoughtful winemaking to capture the authentic character of the region rather than chasing international trends. Over the years, the estate has become a reference point for serious, ageworthy Bairrada wines that balance structure with finesse. GRANDE VADIO stands as the pinnacle of their red portfolio, a flagship cuvée that has helped cement Vadio’s reputation among Portugal’s most respected boutique producers and has played a key role in the modern revival of Baga on the world stage.
