Description
Trotanoy 1999 is a classic Right Bank Bordeaux that showcases the estate’s signature combination of power and polish in a beautifully mature frame. This dark ruby red Pomerol delivers layered notes of earth, mocha, cherry and tobacco, wrapped in a supple, medium-bodied structure with low acidity and sweet, generous fruit. A benchmark vintage for lovers of traditional Bordeaux, it offers both immediate charm and the refined elegance that has long defined this historic estate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1999 Trotanoy shows a deep, dark ruby hue with a subtle brickish rim, reflecting its evolution in bottle while still retaining impressive color and concentration. The nose is inviting and complex, with earthy tones of forest floor and warm soil intertwined with mocha, ripe red and black cherries, dried tobacco leaf and a hint of truffle and cedar.
On the palate, this is a medium-weight yet richly flavored wine, with silky textures and a core of sweet, ripe fruit. Flavors of black cherry, red plum, cocoa and roasted coffee are lifted by nuances of dried herbs and spices, all carried by very soft acidity and well-integrated, polished tannins. The finish is long, smooth and savory, emphasizing elegance rather than sheer power. Initially recommended to be enjoyed within 10–12 years of release, bottles that have been well cellared are now fully mature and should be enjoyed soon, as the wine is at or near its plateau of drinkability.
Production
Château Trotanoy sits on one of Pomerol’s most revered terroirs, with a rare combination of clay and gravel soils that give Merlot in particular both depth and structure. The vineyard is predominantly planted to Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, yielding naturally low crops of intensely flavored fruit. Harvesting is typically done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection. In the cellar, traditional Bordeaux methods are favored: gentle extraction, fermentation in temperature-controlled vats and aging in high-quality French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the natural character of the wine.
Food & Serving
The 1999 Trotanoy is an ideal partner for refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb, veal tenderloin, duck breast, beef tournedos, mushroom risotto or truffle-infused poultry. Its earthy, tobacco and mocha tones also work beautifully with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, root vegetables and slow-braised meats. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. Decant gently for 30–60 minutes to allow any sediment to settle and to let the mature bouquet fully unfold, taking care not to over-aerate an older bottle.
Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s most esteemed and long-respected estates, with a history dating back to the 18th century. Its very name, roughly translating to “too annoying” or “too laborious,” refers to the difficulty of working its heavy clay soils—an effort that has long been rewarded with wines of exceptional depth and longevity. Today, Trotanoy is considered a reference point for the appellation, producing Merlot-based wines that stand shoulder to shoulder with the greatest names of the Right Bank. Known for its consistency, old-vine holdings and commitment to traditional winemaking, the château has earned a reputation for crafting wines that age gracefully and express the profound character of Pomerol’s unique terroir.
