Description
Torrevento Castel del Monte Vigna Pedale Rosso Riserva 2017 is a refined expression of Nero di Troia from the sun‑drenched hills of Apulia in southern Italy. This single-vineyard Riserva showcases how an often-under-the-radar indigenous grape can deliver structure, elegance and remarkable finesse. Aged and crafted with care, it offers a polished, terroir-driven red with both character and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Vigna Pedale Riserva shows a deep ruby color with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its time in bottle and oak. The nose is layered and inviting, with notes of ripe red cherry, wild berries and plum interwoven with dried rose petals, Mediterranean herbs, leather, sweet spices and a subtle hint of tobacco and licorice.
On the palate, this is a structured yet graceful wine, true to Nero di Troia’s naturally firm tannins and fresh acidity. Flavors of sour cherry, blackcurrant and dried cranberry are backed by earthy undertones, cocoa, and savory spice. The tannins are fine but persistent, giving the wine a solid backbone, while the finish is long, dry and slightly balsamic. Well-balanced and already approachable, the 2017 has the concentration and structure to continue evolving gracefully for another 6–10 years from vintage, gaining complexity in tertiary notes such as leather, forest floor and dried fruit.
Production
Vigna Pedale is sourced from Torrevento’s own vineyards in the Castel del Monte DOCG zone, a higher-altitude area of northern Apulia where limestone-rich soils, rocky outcrops and cooling breezes from the Murgia plateau help Nero di Troia ripen slowly while preserving acidity and aromatic complexity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the wine is traditionally vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel or concrete to extract color and structure without harshness, followed by extended maturation in large Slavonian oak casks and/or barrels to soften the tannins and develop complexity, before further bottle aging prior to release as a Riserva.
Food & Serving
This Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva is a superb partner for robust, flavorful dishes such as grilled or braised lamb, roast beef, game (venison, wild boar), and rich tomato-based pasta with sausage or ragù. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Caciocavallo, as well as earthy mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic nuances and structure. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended, especially in its younger years, to allow the firm Nero di Troia tannins to relax and the bouquet to fully open.
Producer
Torrevento is a respected winery based in the heart of northern Apulia, housed in a historic monastery in the shadow of Castel del Monte, the famous octagonal castle that gives the appellation its name. Since the mid‑20th century, the estate has focused on championing native Apulian grape varieties, particularly Nero di Troia, and expressing them through carefully tended vineyards and traditional winemaking. Torrevento has played an important role in raising the profile of the Castel del Monte area, with Vigna Pedale often cited as a benchmark Nero di Troia for its consistency, typicity and value. Over the years, the winery has received numerous accolades from Italian and international wine guides, cementing its reputation as one of the key quality producers in the region.
