Description

Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard 2021 is one of the Northern Rhône’s most coveted expressions of Syrah, a dense yet vibrant red that perfectly captures the wild character of Cornas. This is a powerful, concentrated wine that feels almost silky in texture, packed with dark fruit, florals and smoke-tinged complexity. Produced in tiny quantities from old vines on some of Cornas’ finest slopes, it’s a benchmark bottle for collectors and serious Rhône enthusiasts alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Reynard 2021 is deep, opaque ruby with a dark, inky core and a faint purple rim that hints at its youth and intensity. The nose is immediately seductive and layered: crème de cassis and ripe blackberries swirl with notes of crushed violets, black olive, smoked game, charcuterie and graphite-like minerality, alongside hints of cracked black pepper and a touch of earth and garrigue. On the palate, this is thick, mouthcoating and almost creamy in texture, yet finely balanced by vibrant acidity and firm, elongated tannins. Flavors of blackcurrant liqueur, plum skin and wild blackberries are interlaced with smoked meat, tapenade, dark chocolate, violets and a profound, stony minerality that runs through the finish. The structure and concentration suggest excellent aging potential: while it can be approached with a long decant in its youth, it will really start to show its full complexity after 7–10 years in bottle and should evolve gracefully for 20 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Reynard is sourced from some of Allemand’s oldest and steepest parcels in Cornas, rooted in decomposed granite and rocky, sun-exposed terraces that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The vineyards are farmed by hand with a strong respect for nature, essentially organic and with minimal inputs, reflecting Allemand’s belief in translating terroir as transparently as possible. Harvest is done entirely by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification typically involves a high proportion of whole clusters, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and gentle extraction to preserve finesse rather than brute power. The wine is then aged slowly in neutral or older oak barrels, allowing the Syrah and its granite-born minerality to take center stage, before being bottled with minimal intervention.

Food & Serving
This Cornas is a natural partner for richly flavored, savory dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, pepper-crusted venison, slow-braised beef cheeks, duck with blackcurrant or cherry sauce, or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring black olives, tapenade or smoked elements. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatics and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to allow the tannins to soften and the layers of fruit, florals and gamey complexity to fully unfurl; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
Thierry Allemand is one of the modern legends of Cornas and a reference point for traditional, artisanal Syrah in the Northern Rhône. Starting with almost nothing in the 1980s, he painstakingly reclaimed and replanted abandoned terraces, often working alone on the steep granite slopes that define the appellation. Over time, his meticulous, low-intervention approach and deep commitment to expressing individual lieux-dits like Reynard helped redefine the reputation of Cornas from rustic to world-class. Today his wines are among the most sought-after in the region, prized for their combination of density, precision, and a wild, soulful character that many consider the purest expression of Cornas terroir.
