Description

Swartland Palladius 2022 from The Sadie Family is one of South Africa’s benchmark white blends and a true statement wine from the Swartland. Crafted from 11 grape varieties sourced from 17 old-vine vineyards, it offers remarkable depth, texture and energy in a single, seamless expression. Eben Sadie himself calls it his most complex and challenging wine to make – and it shows in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Palladius 2022 shows a luminous, pale gold hue with green and straw glints that hint at both freshness and concentration. The nose is layered and captivating: ripe stone fruits (white peach, apricot) mingle with lemon blossom, citrus oil, and notes of pastry cream, saffron, and gentle baking spice. With air, subtle hints of almond, wild herbs and crushed stones emerge, underlining its complexity. On the palate, the wine is silky and textural yet beautifully poised, with a refined, almost weightless power. A core of ripe orchard and stone fruit is wrapped in creamy nuances and lifted by vibrant acidity and a saline, mineral edge. The finish is long, precise and savoury, with spice, citrus peel and floral notes unfolding slowly. Thanks to its old-vine concentration, structural backbone and careful élévage, the 2022 Palladius has excellent aging potential; it will reward 10–15 years in the cellar, gaining further complexity, nutty tones and honeyed depth over time.

Production
Palladius is sourced from a patchwork of old-vine parcels across Paardeberg, Piketberg and St. Helena Bay in the Swartland, where decomposed granite, schist and varied coastal influences lend the wine its signature mineral tension and layered character. The blend comprises Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho, Roussanne, Marsanne, Semillon Gris, Sémillon, Palomino and Colombard. Harvest is particularly intricate, as each variety and site ripens at different times, demanding multiple passes and careful timing of both separate fermentations and co-fermentations. Fermentation takes place with a minimalist, hands-off approach, followed by 12 months of maturation in amphorae and concrete, which preserve purity and texture, and an additional 12 months in large, seasoned foudres, adding subtle oxygenation and harmony without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic white best paired with refined, flavourful dishes: think grilled or roast poultry with herbs, rich shellfish (lobster, langoustines, scallops), line-caught fish with beurre blanc, or Mediterranean-inspired vegetable dishes with saffron, fennel and olive oil. It also works beautifully with subtly spiced North African or Middle Eastern cuisine, as well as aged hard cheeses and semi-soft, washed-rind cheeses. Serve slightly chilled, around 11–13°C, to allow the full aromatic spectrum and texture to unfold. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to let the many layers of aroma and flavour fully express themselves.

Producer
The Sadie Family Wines, founded by visionary winemaker Eben Sadie in the late 1990s, has been instrumental in redefining South African fine wine and placing the Swartland firmly on the world map. Working predominantly with dry-farmed, old-vine parcels, the estate champions terroir-driven wines that reflect the region’s diverse soils and rugged climate with clarity and finesse. Palladius, alongside its red counterpart Columella, has become one of the Cape’s most acclaimed and sought-after wines, regularly earning international critical praise and serving as a reference point for complex, ageworthy white blends from the Southern Hemisphere.
