Description

Tertre Roteboeuf 2022 is a silken, almost hedonistic expression of Saint-Émilion, crafted in the unmistakable house style of François Mitjavile. This is a right-bank Bordeaux that marries sensual texture with serious structure, wrapping ripe fruit and spice in a polished, velvety frame. Long considered one of the most singular and characterful wines in Bordeaux, Tertre Roteboeuf continues in 2022 to stand apart for its depth, charm, and unmistakable personality.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Tertre Roteboeuf shows a deep, vibrant ruby to purple hue, with a glossy, almost opaque core that speaks to both concentration and youth. The nose is immediately inviting, with aromas of raspberry compote and blood orange opening the show, followed by layers of mocha, cinnamon, fresh leather and a faint mineral edge. Subtle floral tones and a touch of warm spice add further complexity as the wine breathes. On the palate, the wine is caressing and silk-textured, gliding over the tongue with a plush, graceful feel. The ripe red and dark berry fruit is wrapped in fine, ripe tannins that are well-hidden at first but clearly present, giving the wine its backbone and aging capacity. Mocha, sweet spice and a gentle savoury note unfold across the mid-palate, while floral, spicy and mineral nuances stretch into a lively, persistent finish. While already seductive in its youth, this 2022 has the structure to evolve beautifully over 15–20+ years in a good cellar, gaining further complexity and nuance with time.

Production
Tertre Roteboeuf sits on a south-facing amphitheatre-like slope just outside Saint-Émilion, benefiting from excellent exposure and limestone-clay soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The vineyard, planted primarily to Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, is tended with meticulous, low-intervention methods, and yields are kept deliberately low to maximise flavour intensity and balance. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness, with an emphasis on picking healthy, perfectly mature fruit. In the cellar, vinification is traditional yet highly attentive: gentle extraction, long, slow fermentations and élevage in a high proportion of French oak barrels (a significant share new), allowing the wine to develop its signature silkiness and layered aromatics without losing its sense of place.

Food & Serving
This is a luxurious Saint-Émilion that shines alongside refined, flavourful dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, venison, or veal with morel sauce. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, rich poultry like pigeon or duck, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and supple texture. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to help the tannins relax and the wine fully express its layered bouquet; as it matures, a shorter decant mainly for sediment management will suffice.

Producer
Tertre Roteboeuf is one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive estates, located in the Saint-Émilion appellation and run by the visionary François Mitjavile and his family. Over the past several decades, the domaine has gained a near-cult status for its singular style, which emphasizes ripe yet harmonious fruit, luxurious texture, and profound aromatic complexity rather than strict adherence to convention. Despite its modest size, Tertre Roteboeuf has become a reference point for artisanal, character-driven right-bank Bordeaux and is widely admired by critics and collectors alike for producing some of the region’s most memorable and individualistic wines.
