Description

Terralsole Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a refined expression of 100% Sangiovese from the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, crafted by the boutique estate Terralsole. This vintage showcases the estate’s hallmark balance of power and elegance, bringing together ripe fruit, vibrant acidity, and finely woven tannins. As a Brunello di Montalcino, it stands within one of Italy’s most revered DOCG appellations, marrying traditional craftsmanship with a distinctly artisanal, modern sensibility.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Terralsole Brunello di Montalcino shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet highlights forming at the rim. The color hints at both concentration and freshness, a visual prelude to the wine’s poised structure. The nose opens with layered aromas of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and blood orange, followed by notes of dried rose petals, tobacco leaf, and a subtle hint of leather. With air, more complex undertones emerge: sweet spices such as cinnamon and clove, a touch of cedar, and a whisper of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a precise, energetic line of acidity that carries the succulent red fruit flavors. Fine, chalky tannins frame notes of sour cherry, pomegranate, and plum, supported by savory nuances of balsamic, dried thyme, and earthy minerality. The finish is long, harmonious, and mouthwatering, promising excellent evolution in the bottle. While already approachable with proper aeration, the 2019 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more under good cellar conditions.

Production
Terralsole’s vineyards lie on sun-drenched slopes in the southeastern sector of Montalcino, an area known for its mix of clay, limestone, and galestro (crumbly marl) soils that naturally limit yields and enhance Sangiovese’s aromatic complexity. The estate practices sustainable, naturally oriented viticulture, using organic fertilization, cover crops, and meticulous canopy management to ensure healthy, balanced fruit; from 2018, the property has been officially certified 100% organic. Harvesting is typically carried out by hand, with careful selection of bunches in the vineyard and often a further sorting at the winery to ensure only perfectly ripe grapes are used. In the cellar, Terralsole combines traditional Brunello methods with a sensitive, artisanal touch: Sangiovese is fermented in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve purity of fruit, followed by extended maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic depth. The wine then undergoes a lengthy maturation in carefully chosen oak (often a combination of larger Slavonian casks and French oak) to build structure and complexity while respecting the character of the fruit and terroir, before further refinement in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
Terralsole Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is a superb partner for classic Tuscan cuisine and other richly flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb shanks, wild game such as venison or boar, and hearty stews. Mushroom risotto, truffle-infused pastas, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano also highlight the wine’s savory depth and vibrant acidity. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in generous Burgundy or large red wine stems to allow the bouquet to expand. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours of decanting to soften the tannins and fully express the aromatic complexity; older bottles should be decanted more gently, primarily to remove sediment.

Producer
Terralsole, meaning “land toward the sun,” was founded in 1996 by Mario Bollag and his wife, musician Athena Tergis, as the realization of a long-held dream to unite fine winemaking with a deep love of art and music. A true boutique estate in Montalcino, Terralsole has built a reputation for Brunellos that are both expressive and impeccably balanced, reflecting a philosophy that values harmony, nuance, and a strong sense of place. Over more than two decades, Mario has crafted award-winning Brunello di Montalcino wines using sustainable and increasingly organic practices—employing natural vineyard methods, organic fertilizers, and cover crops—which culminated in the estate’s classification as 100% organic from 2018. Terralsole’s labels, often featuring artistic designs, echo the creativity found in the wines themselves, and the estate is now recognized as a distinctive voice within the Montalcino region, contributing to its prestige with soulful, terroir-driven expressions of Sangiovese.
