Description

Terralibera’s “Da Solo” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC Classico Superiore 2023 is a tiny-production white that borders on cult rarity, with only around 2,000 bottles made each year. Sourced from a single, high-lying parcel in the hills of the Marche, this Verdicchio captures a pure, precise expression of its terroir. Crafted with minimal intervention, it offers an elegant, quietly complex alternative to more commercial Italian whites while honoring the historic Verdicchio tradition of the Castelli di Jesi.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Verdicchio shows a luminous straw-yellow color with greenish highlights, signaling youth and freshness. The nose is deliberately restrained rather than exuberant, opening gradually with delicate floral notes of acacia blossom, followed by nuances of white peach, white currant and a zesty lift of pink grapefruit. With air, a subtle herbal and saline minerality begins to emerge, hinting at the wine’s underlying structure. On the palate, “Da Solo” is finely textured, with a gentle, almost creamy extract sweetness that is immediately balanced by a lively, well-judged acidity. Citrus and white stone fruits are wrapped around a distinctly salty, chalky-mineral backbone that gives length and tension. Layers of subtle spice and savory, almost almond-like nuances unfold through the mid-palate, making the finish long, dry and intriguingly complex. Enjoyable now for its freshness and energy, it has the structure to evolve over the next 3–5 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed and balsamic tones typical of quality Verdicchio.

Production
The grapes for “Da Solo” come exclusively from a single 1.38-hectare parcel planted on the highest elevation of a hillside, with a north-west exposure that preserves acidity and aromatic finesse. The vineyard, located in the Castelli di Jesi area of the Marche, is currently in conversion to organic farming, with careful work in the vines and a focus on low yields to maximize concentration and purity. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, allowing precise selection of healthy, optimally ripe bunches. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in stainless steel, reflecting a minimally interventionist philosophy. The wine is then aged for six months on fine lees in stainless steel tanks, adding texture and complexity, followed by a further six months of bottle refinement before release, ensuring integration and harmony of its components.

Food & Serving
This Verdicchio is an excellent partner for refined seafood dishes such as grilled or baked white fish, shellfish, seared scallops and crudo, as well as classic Marche pairings like brodetto (fish stew) and simple preparations of clams or mussels. It also works beautifully with risotto (especially with seafood or spring vegetables), delicate poultry, fresh goat cheese and mildly aged pecorino. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C, to allow the floral and mineral notes to express themselves. A brief 15–20 minutes in the fridge before serving is usually enough; if possible, open the bottle a few minutes in advance or give it a quick swirl in the glass rather than a long decant, as extended aeration is not necessary for this fresh, precision-driven style.

Producer
Terralibera is a small, quality-focused agricultural estate based in Serra de’ Conti, in the heart of the Castelli di Jesi zone in the Marche region of Italy. Working on a boutique scale, the estate emphasizes meticulous vineyard work and low-intervention winemaking to capture the authentic character of Verdicchio and its hillside terroirs. From their base on Via San Paterniano, Terralibera is contributing to the region’s growing reputation for artisanal, terroir-driven whites, favoring hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentations and increasingly organic practices. With micro-cuvées like “Da Solo”, they have gained recognition among enthusiasts seeking limited-production, site-expressive Verdicchio that showcases the understated finesse and aging potential that has long made Castelli di Jesi one of Italy’s most respected white wine appellations.
