Description
Tenute di Nuna Etna Bianco 2020 is a refined, mineral-driven white wine from the dramatic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Crafted from Carricante, the signature white grape of Etna, it captures the precision, tension and salty freshness that have made this volcanic region one of Italy’s most exciting terroirs. Biodynamic farming and careful cellar work highlight the purity of fruit and the unmistakable stamp of Etna’s ash-rich soils, resulting in a wine that is both vibrant today and promising for short-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Etna Bianco shows a bright, pale straw to light golden hue with crystalline clarity, hinting at its freshness and youthful energy. The nose is lifted and precise, offering layers of zesty citrus (lemon zest, grapefruit), white peach, crisp green apple and orange blossom, all interwoven with notes of wet stone, sea spray and a subtle smoky, volcanic edge.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet wonderfully taut, driven by Carricante’s characteristic high acidity. A core of citrus and stone fruit is wrapped in a fine, saline minerality, giving a mouthwatering, almost savory impression. The texture is enhanced by several months of sur lie aging, adding a gentle creaminess and depth without sacrificing tension. The finish is long and linear, with lingering notes of lemon rind, herbs and a distinct salty snap. Enjoy now for its vivid freshness, or cellar for 3–5 years to develop additional complexity and nuance.
Production
The grapes for Tenute di Nuna Etna Bianco 2020 are sourced from high-altitude vineyards planted between 500 and 700 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Etna. Here, vines grow in soils rich in volcanic ash, basalt and fragmented lava, a mix that ensures excellent drainage and imparts the hallmark mineral edge and salinity to the wine. Farmed biodynamically, the vineyards are tended with meticulous care, and the grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and strict selection. After a gentle pressing, fermentation takes place at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatic purity and terroir expression. The wine then rests for several months sur lie, also in steel, allowing the fine lees to contribute creamier texture, subtle complexity and extra length without the influence of oak.
Food & Serving
This Etna Bianco is a natural partner for seafood and Mediterranean cuisine. Pair it with oysters, grilled prawns, seared scallops, crudo, or simply prepared white fish with lemon and herbs; it also shines alongside octopus salad, linguine alle vongole, fresh goat cheese, burrata with citrus, and vegetable-based dishes such as grilled asparagus or fennel and orange salad. Serve well-chilled at 10–12 °C to highlight its precision and minerality. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving or giving it a quick splash in a small carafe can help the aromatics unfurl.
