Description

Tenute di Nuna Etna Bianco 2018 is a characterful Sicilian white wine born on the dramatic slopes of Mount Etna. Crafted primarily from the indigenous Carricante grape with a touch of Catarratto, it captures the tension between crisp mountain freshness and the depth of volcanic terroir. This Etna DOC bottling showcases the elegance and mineral drive that have made Etna one of Italy’s most exciting white wine regions in recent years.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Tenute di Nuna Etna Bianco 2018 shows a bright, pale straw color with greenish reflections, hinting at its freshness and youthful energy. The nose is vibrant and layered, with intense aromas of lemon zest, white peach and crunchy green apple, wrapped in notes of wildflowers, fresh herbs and a subtle smoky, flinty edge typical of Etna’s volcanic soils. On the palate, the wine is dry, medium-bodied and beautifully focused, driven by a lively, linear acidity. Citrus and stone fruit flavors are joined by hints of fennel, mountain herbs and a distinct saline, mineral backbone that gives precision and length. The sur lie aging brings a gentle creaminess and texture without weighing the wine down, leaving a long, mouthwatering, slightly salty finish. Drinking well now, it has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully for a further 5–7 years, gaining notes of honey, nuts and dried flowers with bottle age.

Production
The grapes for this Etna Bianco come from sustainably farmed, high-altitude vineyards at around 700–900 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Here, intense sunlight, cool nights and well-drained volcanic soils rich in basalt, pumice and ash combine to produce grapes of notable freshness and aromatic intensity. The fruit is harvested by hand in small crates to protect the bunches, then gently pressed to preserve delicacy and purity. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to capture the varietal character of Carricante and Catarratto, followed by 6–8 months of sur lie aging with regular bâtonnage. This extended contact with the lees adds texture, complexity and a creamy mouthfeel, while maintaining the wine’s crisp, mineral-driven profile.

Food & Serving
This Etna Bianco is a versatile partner at the table, particularly with seafood and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. It pairs beautifully with oysters, grilled prawns, seared scallops, octopus, and simply prepared white fish, as well as vegetable-based dishes such as grilled zucchini, asparagus, artichoke risotto or herb-infused pasta. Creamy cheeses and mild goat’s cheese also work well with its acidity and mineral edge. Serve chilled at 10–12 °C to highlight its freshness and aromatics. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into a carafe 15–20 minutes before serving can help open up the more subtle smoky and herbal notes.

Producer
Tenute di Nuna is a quality-focused producer on Mount Etna, working with the region’s traditional grape varieties to express the character of this singular volcanic landscape. Situated within the Etna DOC, the estate benefits from the area’s dramatic altitude shifts and patchwork of lava-derived soils, which yield wines with tension, minerality and distinctive personality. By combining sustainable vineyard practices with careful, low-intervention cellar work, Tenute di Nuna contributes to Etna’s growing reputation as one of Italy’s most compelling and dynamic wine regions, particularly for ageworthy, terroir-driven white wines based on Carricante.
