Description
Tenuta Sant'Antonio Amarone Lilium Est Riserva 2010 is the estate’s flagship Amarone, crafted only in the finest vintages from meticulously selected grapes in the hills east of Verona. This is a powerful yet finely tuned red, made in tiny quantities and designed for long-term cellaring. Combining traditional appassimento with modern precision, it delivers the depth, intensity and elegance that have made it one of the benchmark Amarone wines of Veneto.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Lilium Est Riserva shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a narrow brick-tinged rim, reflecting both concentration and graceful evolution. The nose is expansive and layered: rich black cherry and dried plum give way to fig, candied orange peel, dark chocolate, licorice and sweet spice, with hints of pipe tobacco, espresso, leather and dried roses emerging as it opens.
On the palate, this Amarone is full-bodied and richly textured, yet impeccably balanced. Intense flavors of macerated black cherry, kirsch, ripe blackberry and dried cranberry are wrapped in notes of cocoa, vanilla bean, clove and cinnamon, with savory undertones of balsamic, roasted herbs and earth. The tannins are firm but velvety, supported by a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh despite its opulence. The finish is very long, echoing dark fruit, spice and a gentle bitter chocolate twist typical of great Amarone. The 2010 has excellent aging potential and, while already beautifully expressive, will continue to develop tertiary complexity for another 10–15 years or more if well cellared.
Production
Lilium Est Riserva is sourced from high-quality hillside vineyards in the Valpolicella area of Veneto, where calcareous and volcanic soils, good drainage and significant day–night temperature differences help concentrate aromatics and preserve acidity. Grapes—Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina and Oseleta—are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted. Following the traditional appassimento method, the bunches are laid to dry in well-ventilated lofts for several months, concentrating sugars, flavors and tannins. After a long, gentle fermentation of the semi-dried grapes, the wine is aged for an extended period in small oak barrels (often a high proportion of new barriques), allowing it to gain structure, complexity and refinement before bottling and further bottle aging.
Food & Serving
This is a meditation wine that shines with rich, savory dishes: think slow-braised beef cheeks, osso buco, venison, wild boar ragu, aged hard cheeses (such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano) and mature blue cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes and deeply flavored mushroom preparations. Serve at 18–20°C (64–68°F) in large Burgundy-style or Bordeaux glasses to let the aromas unfold fully. Decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended, especially at this stage of its life, to soften the tannins and reveal the full aromatic spectrum.
Producer
Tenuta Sant’Antonio is a family-run estate founded by the four Castagnedi brothers in the early 1990s, building on their family’s long history as grape growers in the hills east of Verona. In a relatively short time, they have become one of the most respected names in Valpolicella and Soave, known for meticulous vineyard management and a quality-over-quantity philosophy. Their Amarone wines, particularly the Lilium Est Riserva, have received significant international acclaim and helped redefine expectations for modern, high-end Amarone—combining richness and concentration with remarkable finesse and aging capacity.
