Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Tenuta Perano Chianti Classico Riserva shows a bright, deep ruby-red colour with garnet highlights at the rim. The nose opens with pure red and black cherry, wild berries and ripe plum, followed by notes of violet, dried Mediterranean herbs, sweet spice and a gentle hint of cedar and tobacco from the long oak aging. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with finely etched tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity that is characteristic of Sangiovese grown at altitude. Flavours of juicy cherry, raspberry and redcurrant are layered with notes of leather, licorice, forest floor and a touch of cocoa. The Merlot adds a subtle roundness and softness to the mid-palate without overshadowing the Sangiovese’s structure and precision. The finish is long, savory and elegant, suggesting very good aging potential: it will drink beautifully now with a short decant, but should continue to develop complexity over the next 8–12 years.

Production
Tenuta Perano sits about 500 metres above sea level in Gaiole in Chianti, in a natural amphitheatre facing southwest. This exposure, combined with stony, well-drained soils rich in galestro and alberese, creates ideal conditions for slow, even ripening and aromatic concentration in Sangiovese. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested, allowing for strict selection of only the best bunches destined for the Riserva. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, the wine undergoes maceration on the skins to extract colour, tannin and aromatic complexity. It is then aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks, a traditional choice in Tuscany that enhances structure and longevity while preserving the purity of fruit and terroir expression, before further refinement in bottle.

This Chianti Classico Riserva is a natural partner for classic Tuscan and hearty Mediterranean dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops, slow-braised beef or wild boar ragù, as well as aged Pecorino Toscano, mushroom risotto and truffle-accented pasta. Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and vibrant acidity. Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the tannins to soften and the wine’s layered bouquet to fully open.
