Description
Tenuta di Monterufoli Vermentino Pian di Seta 2021 is a bright, coastal white from the wild, sun-drenched hills of southern Tuscany. Crafted by Tenute del Cerro, it showcases the pure, Mediterranean character of Vermentino with a refined, modern touch. Named “Pian di Seta” (Silk Plain), this cuvée is all about texture, freshness, and an elegant, lingering finish.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Pian di Seta shines a pale straw yellow with greenish highlights, hinting at its vibrancy and youth. The nose is expressive and inviting, with notes of lemon zest, white peach, and crisp green apple layered over Mediterranean herbs, wild fennel, and a gentle saline breeze.
On the palate, this Vermentino is dry, medium-bodied and finely textured, balancing juicy citrus and stone-fruit flavors with a refreshing line of acidity. Hints of lime, pear, and white flowers are supported by a subtle savory edge and a clean, mineral finish that recalls sea spray and wet stones. Enjoy it in its youth for maximum freshness and aromatics, though it will develop a bit more complexity and roundness over the next 2–3 years.
Production
Sourced from estate vineyards in the Monterufoli area of Tuscany, this Vermentino benefits from a mix of mineral-rich soils and a strong maritime influence, which preserve acidity and enhance the wine’s saline, aromatic character. Grapes are typically harvested in the cool of early morning to protect their delicate aromas and natural freshness. In the cellar, gentle pressing and a cool, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel help retain the pure varietal expression of Vermentino, while a short period on fine lees adds texture and a subtle, silky mouthfeel true to the wine’s “Pian di Seta” name.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for seafood: think grilled prawns, seared scallops, seafood risotto, or simple grilled fish with lemon and herbs. It also works beautifully with fresh goat cheese, vegetable antipasti, and light pasta dishes featuring olive oil, citrus, or garden herbs. Serve well-chilled at about 8–10°C. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving allows the aromatics to open up nicely.
Producer
Tenute del Cerro is a respected Italian wine group with deep roots in central Italy, known for crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines from some of Tuscany’s most characterful zones. The Tenuta di Monterufoli estate, once a historic property surrounded by forests and rugged hills, has become a reference for high-quality coastal Tuscan whites and reds, particularly Vermentino. By combining careful vineyard management with modern, precision winemaking, Tenute del Cerro has helped bring renewed attention to lesser-known Tuscan subzones and continues to earn recognition for wines that balance regional authenticity with polished, contemporary style.
