Description
Tenuta di Fessina Etna Rosso Il Musmeci 2023 is a heartfelt tribute to the Musmeci family and to Ignazio Musmeci, whose care helped preserve the historic vineyards of Fessina for generations. Made from Nerello Mascalese grown on the volcanic slopes of Etna, it combines mountain freshness, elegance, and a strong sense of place in a style that speaks beautifully of Sicily’s most distinctive terroir.
Tasting Notes
The wine is typically bright and translucent ruby in the glass, with the finesse and lift that make Nerello Mascalese so compelling. On the nose, expect red cherries, wild strawberries, rose petals, blood orange, and subtle herbal notes, with a mineral edge that reflects Etna’s volcanic soils.
On the palate, it is likely to be vibrant and finely structured, showing juicy red berry fruit, lively acidity, delicate tannins, and a savoury, mineral-driven finish. This is a wine that can be enjoyed for its energy and precision now, but it also has the structure and balance to develop well over the next few years.
Production
Il Musmeci comes from old Nerello Mascalese vines in the Fessina vineyards on Etna, where the volcanic terroir lends the wine tension, freshness, and a distinctly saline-mineral character. The historic vines, some over 80 years old, are cultivated with great respect for their age and the landscape, preserving a traditional expression of the mountain.
Harvesting is typically done by hand to ensure only the best fruit is selected, followed by careful vinification designed to preserve the grape’s aromatic purity and the nuance of the site. The result is a wine that reflects both the complexity of the old vines and the character of Etna’s unique growing conditions.
Food & Serving
This Etna Rosso is an excellent match for roasted poultry, grilled lamb, mushroom dishes, and Sicilian-inspired cuisine such as eggplant-based preparations or rich tomato sauces. Serve it slightly cool, ideally around 16–18°C, and consider a short decant if opening it young to allow its aromas and texture to open fully.
