Description

Tenuta di Biserno Il Pino di Biserno 2022 is a refined Tuscan red that brilliantly showcases the estate’s coastal take on a classic Bordeaux-style blend. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Franc with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, it balances Mediterranean ripeness with polished structure. Positioned as the ‘second wine’ of Biserno, Il Pino has earned its own reputation for offering serious complexity and elegance at a more approachable price than the flagship Biserno.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Il Pino di Biserno shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with purple reflections at the rim, hinting at its youth and intensity. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry wrapped in notes of violet, dried Mediterranean herbs, cedar, graphite and a touch of sweet spice from oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with finely grained tannins and a core of juicy black and red fruit. Flavours of cassis, plum and wild berries are lifted by savoury nuances of tobacco leaf, cocoa, pencil shavings and a whisper of liquorice. The acidity is fresh and well-integrated, keeping the wine lively and precise, while the finish is long, elegant and slightly saline, reflecting its coastal origins. While already enjoyable in its youth for its bright fruit and suppleness, this vintage has the structure to evolve nicely over the next 8–10 years, gaining further complexity and softness with a few years in the cellar.

Production
Il Pino di Biserno comes from the coastal hills of Bibbona and the upper Maremma in Tuscany, just inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Here, a mix of clay, sand and mineral-rich alluvial soils, combined with cooling maritime breezes, creates ideal conditions for late-ripening Bordeaux varieties, particularly Cabernet Franc. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to ensure careful selection, often parcel by parcel to capture optimal ripeness and preserve aromatic purity. In the cellar, the varieties are vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, allowing for precise fermentation and gentle extraction of colour and tannin. After blending, the wine is matured in French oak barriques (a mix of new and used) to add texture, spice and subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2022 Il Pino di Biserno is a versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, lamb chops with rosemary, Tuscan-style bistecca alla fiorentina, game birds, hearty ragù-based pasta dishes and aged hard cheeses like Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. It also complements mushroom dishes and rich vegetable stews with herbs and tomatoes. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C. Younger bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the aromas to open and the tannins to soften; with a few years of bottle age, a shorter aeration will be sufficient.

Producer
Tenuta di Biserno is a prestigious estate in the coastal area of Bibbona, adjacent to Bolgheri in Tuscany, founded by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, the visionary behind iconic Tuscan wines such as Ornellaia. Recognising the remarkable potential of this unique terroir for Bordeaux grape varieties, he established Biserno to create wines that marry Tuscan character with classic Bordeaux structure. Over time, the estate has become a benchmark for Cabernet Franc–driven blends from the Tuscan coast, praised by critics and collectors for their finesse, longevity and distinctive maritime freshness. Il Pino di Biserno, initially conceived as the second wine, has emerged as a reference in its own right, consistently offering high quality and a true introduction to the Biserno style.
