Description
Tenuta di Arceno’s Il Fauno di Arcanum is a polished, Bordeaux-inspired Tuscan red that showcases the estate’s impressive range and long winemaking heritage. Crafted by Pierre Seillan and Lawrence Cronin, it blends ripe fruit, freshness, and layered complexity from warmer vineyard blocks in the southern edge of Chianti Classico.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, it opens with an expressive bouquet of black cherry, cassis, rosemary, rose petals, nutmeg, and a touch of sweet mint. On the palate, it is elegant yet full-bodied, with dark fruit, pepper, mocha, and a cool earthy note carrying through to a refined, balanced finish.
The wine has already benefited from time in bottle, which has helped knit the structure together and soften the edges. It should continue to develop gracefully over the coming years, gaining even more nuance and secondary complexity.
Production
The grapes come from four blocks planted on slightly warmer sites within Tenuta di Arceno’s 1,000-hectare estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, where vineyards sit at 300–500 meters above sea level. The area enjoys a mix of cool mountain breezes and warmer southern winds, while the varied soils and microclimates are carefully divided into numerous cru sites. After harvest, the wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, adding structure and subtle spice without overpowering the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile partner for grilled lamb, roast beef, game birds, mushroom dishes, and rich pasta with ragù. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if drinking it young or alongside a particularly hearty meal.
Producer
Tenuta di Arceno is located at the southernmost edge of Chianti Classico and has produced wine since the 16th century. Once owned by the Del Taja and Piccolomini families, the estate was acquired in 1994 by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke of Jackson Family Wines, a group known for prestigious properties such as Anakota, Lokoya, and Vérité. Today, Arceno is recognized for its historic significance, meticulous vineyard mapping, and its ability to express Toscana’s elegance with precision.
