Description
Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 1995 is a beautifully mature expression of classic Brunello, crafted from 100% Sangiovese Grosso in one of Tuscany’s most storied appellations. Drawn from vineyards with varied exposures and soils, this Riserva showcases the harmony between a characterful terroir and a structured, ageworthy vintage. As one of the older, highly respected estates in Montalcino, Tenuta Caparzo has produced a 1995 Riserva that speaks eloquently of time, place, and tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1995 Riserva shows a deep garnet core with brick-orange reflections at the rim, a clear sign of its graceful evolution. The nose is complex and layered, opening with dried cherries and red plum, followed by leather, cigar tobacco, balsamic notes, and violets. Subtle hints of forest floor, dried herbs, cedar, and a touch of game add depth and intrigue as the wine unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet beautifully balanced Brunello, where maturity brings elegance rather than heaviness. The fruit is predominantly dried and macerated red cherry, framed by well-integrated tannins and a vibrant, still-present acidity that keeps the wine lively. Tertiary nuances of truffle, licorice, underbrush, and a gentle savory edge linger on a long, persistent finish. At this stage, the wine is fully in its drinking window, with the structure and freshness to hold a few more years for those who enjoy the nuances of fully evolved Brunello, but it is very much a pleasure to drink now.
Production
Tenuta Caparzo sources the grapes for this Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from estate vineyards spread across different parts of Montalcino, combining clay- and limestone-rich slopes with parcels containing sandier soils. This mosaic of terroirs contributes to the wine’s aromatic complexity and layered texture. The Sangiovese Grosso is harvested by hand, allowing for careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. Vinification follows traditional Brunello methods, with a long maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin, and flavor. The wine then ages for around 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks, preserving the purity of the fruit while gradually integrating structure, followed by a minimum of 12 months of bottle aging before release to refine its aromatic profile and finesse.
Food & Serving
This mature Brunello Riserva is an excellent companion to rich, savory dishes such as braised beef (ossobuco, brasato al vino rosso), slow-cooked lamb, and game dishes like venison or wild boar. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses—Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Toscano, or mature Comté—and earthy preparations featuring mushrooms or truffle. For best expression, serve at 16–18 °C and decant 2–3 hours before serving to allow the wine to fully open and shed any remaining bottle reduction. Use large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to highlight its evolved aromas and refined texture.
Producer
Founded in the late 1960s, Tenuta Caparzo is one of the historic names that helped shape Brunello di Montalcino’s reputation on the world stage. As one of the earlier estates to believe in the potential of Montalcino’s Sangiovese Grosso, Caparzo played a key role in demonstrating how site diversity and careful, traditional winemaking could yield complex, long-lived wines. The winery owns vineyards spread across several of the appellation’s key zones, giving it a distinctive advantage in blending terroirs for balance and depth. Over the decades, Caparzo’s Brunello and Brunello Riserva bottlings have earned consistent recognition from critics and collectors alike, reinforcing the estate’s status as a benchmark producer within the region.
