Description

Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 1995 is a mature expression of Sangiovese Grosso from one of Montalcino’s benchmark estates. Crafted in a classic, ageworthy style, this bottle offers the rare opportunity to experience Brunello at full tertiary complexity. With nearly three decades in bottle, it shows how beautifully traditional Tuscan winemaking can evolve when carefully cellared.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 1995 Brunello di Montalcino displays a deep garnet core with brick-orange hues at the rim, a hallmark of its advanced age. The nose is complex and layered, offering dried cherry, stewed plum, and blood orange, supported by notes of leather, tobacco leaf, cedar, underbrush, and a touch of balsamic and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is elegant rather than powerful, with silken, resolved tannins and a medium body. Flavors of dried red fruit, black tea, forest floor, and savory spice unfold gradually, with hints of truffle, licorice, and old leather emerging with air. The acidity is still vibrant enough to keep the wine fresh and food-friendly, though the fruit has moved firmly into its tertiary phase. This vintage is at or near peak maturity and should be enjoyed now to within the next few years, making it a compelling choice for those who appreciate fully evolved, traditional Brunello.

Production
Tenuta Caparzo sources its Brunello from vineyards situated on some of Montalcino’s most respected slopes, where a mix of galestro (marl), clay, and sandy soils help Sangiovese Grosso develop aromatic complexity and structure. The warm Tuscan days and cooler nights of the 1995 growing season contributed to balanced ripening and good natural acidity. Grapes were hand-harvested, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks and, in some cases, a portion in French oak, to refine tannins without overwhelming the varietal character. The wine then rests in bottle before release, allowing it to integrate and develop the structure needed for decades of aging.

Food & Serving
This mature Brunello is ideal with classic Tuscan fare and refined, savory dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù, truffled pasta, or aged pecorino and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Game birds, mushroom risotto, and slow-cooked beef or veal also make excellent companions, as the wine’s evolved flavors mirror the depth of these dishes. Serve at 18°C (around 64°F) and allow the bottle to stand upright for several hours before opening to let any sediment settle. Decant gently for 30–60 minutes to help the wine open up, but take care not to over-decant, as older vintages can be delicate.

Producer
Founded in the late 1960s, Tenuta Caparzo was one of the early modern pioneers of Brunello di Montalcino, helping to establish the region’s international reputation. The estate is notable for owning vineyards in several of Montalcino’s key subzones, giving its wines a balance of power, elegance, and aromatic nuance. Over the decades, Caparzo has consistently produced ageworthy Brunello that respects traditional methods while embracing thoughtful innovation. The 1995 vintage comes from a period when the estate was solidifying its status as a reference producer, and bottles from this era are often sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate classic, long-lived Tuscan reds.
