Description
Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino 1990 is a benchmark bottle from one of Tuscany’s truly legendary vintages. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese Grosso at a time when Montalcino was stepping onto the international stage, it marries depth, elegance, and remarkable longevity. Drawing fruit from multiple vineyard zones across Montalcino, Caparzo achieves a finely tuned balance of power, structure, and aromatic complexity that has evolved beautifully over more than three decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this mature Brunello shows a deep garnet, shading to brick at the rim, with a limpid, luminous core that clearly reflects its age and pedigree. The nose is refined and layered: dried sour cherries, plum and prunes mingle with leather, forest floor, balsamic hints, tobacco, and a delicate touch of truffle and spice.
On the palate, the 1990 Caparzo is silky and graceful, yet still supported by a firm, classical Brunello structure. Flavours of mature red fruits, dried cherry and redcurrant are interwoven with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, anise, and subtle savoury umami tones. There is a distinct mineral backbone from the galestro-rich soils, and the tannins are fully resolved, fine-grained, and velvety. The finish is long, persistent, and elegant, with a gentle sweetness of perfectly ripened fruit and a lingering echo of spice and undergrowth. While this wine is at or near its peak, well-stored bottles can continue to offer rewarding drinking, with tertiary nuances gaining further prominence over the next few years.
Production
Caparzo’s vineyards span several subzones of Montalcino, an important advantage in a warm, stable vintage like 1990. The terroir here is dominated by galestro—schistous clay—interspersed with sand and limestone, giving wines notable structure, freshness, and mineral drive. Sangiovese Grosso grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve purity of fruit and aromatics. After fermentation, the wine was aged for roughly 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks, a traditional Brunello approach that softens tannins and promotes complexity without overwhelming the varietal character. Extended bottle aging has allowed the 1990 to develop its nuanced tertiary bouquet and remarkable harmony.
Food & Serving
This mature Brunello is a superb partner for classic Tuscan dishes and refined, earthy cuisine. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb, game birds, osso buco, wild mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano and pecorino. For optimal enjoyment, serve at around 18°C and decant gently 1.5–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to open and to separate it from any natural sediment. Use large Burgundy or wide-bowled glasses to fully appreciate its delicate aromatics and evolved structure.
Producer
Founded in the late 1960s, Tenuta Caparzo was one of the pioneering estates in Brunello di Montalcino, helping shape the region’s rise from local treasure to global icon of fine Italian wine. As one of the first wineries to own vineyards in multiple parts of the Montalcino appellation, Caparzo has long leveraged diverse exposures and soil types to create Brunellos of balance, consistency, and character. Over the decades, the estate has earned a solid reputation for classic, ageworthy wines that respect tradition while embracing thoughtful innovation, and vintages such as 1990 stand as a testament to Caparzo’s significance in the history and evolution of Brunello di Montalcino.
