Description
Tedeschi Marne 180 Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is a rich, classically styled Amarone that showcases the Tedeschi family’s long experience with appassimento wines. Crafted from carefully dried grapes, this wine delivers impressive depth and concentration without losing balance or elegance. Offered here in a 0.375 L format, it’s an ideal way to experience a benchmark Amarone in a more intimate bottle size.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Amarone shows a deep, garnet-ruby color with intense concentration at the core and slow, viscous legs that hint at its richness. The nose opens with pronounced aromas of ripe and dried red fruits, sour cherry and morello cherry, moving into notes of stewed plums, raisins and dried figs. Subtle layers of bitter almond, marzipan, sweet spices and a touch of cocoa and tobacco add complexity and a distinct Amarone character.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, dense and velvety, with a richly textured mouthfeel that coats the tongue. Flavors of red and dark berry compote, dried cherry, plum and raisin are lifted by a savory, bittersweet edge of almond and spice. Despite its opulence and high extract, the structure is well-defined: fresh acidity and firm yet ripe tannins keep the wine from feeling heavy or jammy. In this format and vintage, it is already approachable, but true Amarone fans will find that it can evolve gracefully for several more years, developing more tertiary notes of leather, dried herbs and truffle with careful cellaring.
Production
The Marne 180 takes its name from the marly soils and the 180-degree exposure of the vineyards in the Valpolicella hills, where Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta, Dindarella, Negrara and Rossignola are cultivated. These hillside sites benefit from good drainage, significant diurnal temperature variation and optimal sun exposure, contributing both ripeness and aromatic complexity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity and carefully selected to ensure only the healthiest bunches are used for the appassimento process. After harvest, the grapes are laid out to dry for several weeks to months, concentrating sugars, flavors and phenolic compounds. Once the desired level of dehydration is reached, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is fermented slowly to near dryness, followed by extended maturation in wood and bottle to harmonize the wine’s power, tannin and texture.
Food & Serving
This Amarone shines alongside richly flavored dishes and robust ingredients: braised beef or venison, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game stews, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano or mature pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms or deeply reduced meat sauces, and can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially when young, to allow the wine to open its layered aromatics and soften the tannins.
Producer
The Tedeschi family has been rooted in the Valpolicella region for several generations and is widely regarded as one of the historic names in Amarone production.
