Description
Tedeschi Marne 180 Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2020 is a powerful yet finely crafted expression of classic Amarone from one of Valpolicella’s most respected families. Made from partially dried grapes, it delivers impressive concentration while maintaining balance and poise. The name “Marne 180” refers to the marl (marne) soils and the 180° exposure of the vineyards, underlining the strong link between this wine and its terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Marne 180 Amarone shows a deep, compact ruby red with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose opens intensely with ripe red and black cherries, macerated plums and raisins, followed by notes of dried cranberries, fig, and a subtle floral touch of violets. With air, layers of sweet spice, cocoa, licorice, bitter almond, marzipan, and a hint of tobacco and cedar emerge.
On the palate, this Amarone is full-bodied and velvety with a rich, almost glyceric texture that coats the tongue. Concentrated flavors of dark cherries, blackberry compote and baked plum are interwoven with notes of chocolate, roasted coffee bean, sweet spice and a delicate bitter-herbal edge that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. Fine but persistent tannins and a well-judged fresh acidity bring structure and lift to the generous fruit. The finish is long, warming and multi-layered, suggesting excellent aging potential. Properly cellared, this 2020 vintage should evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, developing greater complexity in its tertiary notes.
Production
The grapes for Marne 180 come from hillside vineyards in Valpolicella with marl-rich soils and optimal exposures that favor slow, even ripening. Traditional Amarone production begins with a careful hand selection of bunches, which are then laid out in drying lofts (fruttai) for several months, allowing water to evaporate and flavors and sugars to concentrate. After the appassimento period, the desiccated grapes are gently pressed and the must undergoes a long, slow fermentation to near dryness, resulting in an intense yet predominantly dry red. The wine is then matured in wood—typically a mix of Slavonian oak casks and/or barrels—to harmonize tannins, build texture, and integrate its rich aromatics before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Amarone is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: braised beef cheeks, ossobuco, venison stews, slow-cooked lamb shanks and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Grana Padano. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, game birds, and dark chocolate-based desserts for a more indulgent pairing. Serve at 16–18 °C in large-bowled glasses to allow the bouquet to fully open. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s full aromatic spectrum.
Producer
The Tedeschi family has been rooted in Valpolicella for several generations and is considered one of the benchmark producers of Amarone. Based in the heart of Veneto, Agricola F.lli Tedeschi has long championed meticulous vineyard management, careful grape selection and a faithful expression of local varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and the lesser-known native grapes like Oseleta and Dindarella. Their work has helped shape the modern reputation of Amarone as a world-class, age-worthy red. Known for wines that combine power with elegance and clarity of terroir, Tedeschi is frequently cited among the leading estates of the region and has received consistent critical acclaim for both their single-vineyard bottlings and classic cuvées such as Marne 180.
