Description
Château Talbot is one of Saint-Julien’s most respected names, and this rare Methuselah format makes the 2023 vintage especially appealing for collectors and celebrations. As a 4ème Grand Cru Classé, it combines the estate’s classic Left Bank refinement with the impressive ageing potential and presence that only large-format bottles can offer.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Talbot typically shows a deep, youthful colour with lively purple highlights. Expect a polished nose of blackcurrant, plum, cedar, tobacco leaf, and subtle floral and graphite notes, with oak adding a gentle frame rather than dominating the aromatics.
On the palate, it is likely to be medium- to full-bodied, with ripe dark fruit, firm but well-integrated tannins, bright Bordeaux acidity, and a long, savoury finish. The Methuselah format will support exceptionally slow development, making this a bottle that can reward patience over many years, and likely decades, in the cellar.
Production
Sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Talbot benefits from a terroir that naturally favours Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wines with structure and finesse. The 2023 vintage would typically be harvested by hand or with careful parcel selection, followed by traditional Bordeaux vinification in temperature-controlled tanks and ageing in French oak to build complexity, texture, and longevity.
Food & Serving
Best served at around 16–18°C. Decanting is recommended if opened young, especially due to the large-format bottle and the wine’s likely structure; a long decant will help the aromatics open and soften the tannins. Ideal with roast lamb, beef fillet, duck, game, truffle dishes, or mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Talbot has long been one of the flagship estates of Saint-Julien and holds the status of 4ème Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 Classification. Known for producing wines that balance classic Bordeaux structure with approachable charm, the estate has built a strong reputation both in France and internationally for consistency, elegance, and cellar-worthy quality.
