Description
Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rouge Le Chapitre 2022 is a finely etched expression of northern Burgundy, where precision, purity and energy define the style. Sourced from the historic Le Chapitre climat, this Pinot Noir captures the tension between finesse and structure that has made Marsannay one of Burgundy’s most exciting appellations to watch. For enthusiasts seeking terroir-driven red Burgundy without the grand cru price tag, this 2022 is a compelling and characterful choice.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Le Chapitre shows a luminous, medium ruby color with youthful violet highlights at the rim. The nose is beautifully lifted and aromatic, offering wild raspberry, red cherry and cranberry, layered with rose petals, crushed stones, smoked tea, and a hint of sous-bois and fine spice.
On the palate, this is vibrant and finely detailed, with juicy red fruits framed by a precise, chalky-mineral backbone. Silky yet energetic tannins and fresh, mouthwatering acidity give the wine both charm and tension, while subtle notes of pomegranate, blood orange zest, savory herbs and a touch of oak spice add complexity on the long, linear finish. While already approachable in its youth, the structure and balance suggest an aging potential of 8–12 years from the vintage, during which the wine will gain further depth, savory nuance and textural harmony.
Production
Le Chapitre is a historic terroir in Marsannay, set on limestone-rich soils with marl and rocky subsoils that bring a marked mineral profile and elegance to the Pinot Noir. Sylvain Pataille farms organically and biodynamically, with great emphasis on low yields, careful canopy management and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve natural freshness and aromatic clarity. In the cellar, Pataille favors gentle, low-intervention winemaking: whole or partial bunch fermentation depending on the vintage, native yeasts, and careful extraction to avoid heaviness. The wine is then aged in Burgundy barrels (with a restrained use of new oak) to refine the tannins and allow the terroir’s saline, stony character to shine through.
Food & Serving
This Marsannay Rouge pairs beautifully with delicately prepared dishes that echo its finesse: roasted chicken with herbs, duck breast with cherries, veal chops, pork tenderloin, or mushroom-based dishes such as wild mushroom risotto or truffled pasta. It also works very well with charcuterie, mild to medium cheeses (Comté, Tomme, Reblochon), and lighter game birds. Serve at 14–16°C (57–60°F) to highlight its aromatic lift and fine structure. A light decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to open up the nose and soften the tannins, while older bottles can be served directly from the bottle with gentle handling.
Producer
Sylvain Pataille is one of the key figures behind the renaissance of Marsannay, a northern Burgundian appellation once overlooked but now celebrated for its quality and character. Starting his domaine in the late 1990s with just a few hectares, Pataille has steadily built a reputation as a meticulous vigneron and a reference point for terroir-expressive, organically farmed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Working as both consultant oenologist and estate grower, he has pushed the region toward higher standards, embracing organic and biodynamic practices long before they were fashionable. Today, his wines—especially cuvées like Le Chapitre—are considered benchmarks for Marsannay and are sought after by Burgundy lovers for their purity, authenticity and remarkable value relative to more famous Côte d’Or appellations.
