Description
Steininger Weissburgunder Trockenbeerenauslese 2015 is a luxurious, lusciously sweet dessert wine from the heart of Kamptal, presented in an elegant 0.375 L bottle. Crafted from painstakingly selected, naturally shriveled Weissburgunder grapes, it offers remarkable concentration, finesse and purity. Hailing from the steep, high-lying vineyards above the village of Langenlois, this wine reflects both Kamptal’s cool-climate precision and Steininger’s reputation for meticulous, quality-driven winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Trockenbeerenauslese shows a deep, golden hue with amber reflections, hinting at both its richness and its development in bottle. The nose is intensely aromatic, with layers of candied citrus peel, ripe apricot, dried pineapple and golden raisins, intertwined with notes of honeycomb, acacia blossom and a subtle touch of caramelized nuts and spice.
On the palate, the wine is opulent yet beautifully balanced, delivering a silken texture and an almost decadent sweetness lifted by vibrant acidity. Flavours of apricot jam, quince paste, baked apple and tropical fruit are wrapped in honeyed richness, with nuances of lemon zest and minerality adding focus and length. The finish is long, precise and mouth-coating, with a lingering echo of dried fruit and spice. Thanks to its concentration, structure and high natural acidity, this 2015 Trockenbeerenauslese has excellent aging potential, easily developing over 10–20 years, gaining more complexity, caramel, nutty notes and a deeper, more layered bouquet over time.
Production
The Weissburgunder grapes for this Trockenbeerenauslese come from Steininger’s higher-elevation vineyards above Langenlois in Kamptal, where cool nights, well-drained soils and the influence of the Kamp river help preserve acidity while allowing for slow, even ripening. In selected vintages like 2015, individual berries affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) are painstakingly hand-picked in several passes through the vineyard at extremely high must weights. This labour-intensive harvest yields minute quantities of intensely concentrated juice. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the thick, sweet must is slowly fermented at controlled temperatures, typically in stainless steel or neutral vessels to preserve purity of fruit. Fermentation stops naturally when the balance between residual sugar, alcohol and acidity is ideal, followed by careful maturation on fine lees before bottling, to enhance texture and complexity while retaining the wine’s vivid freshness.
Food & Serving
This Steininger Weissburgunder Trockenbeerenauslese is a natural partner for rich desserts featuring stone fruits, citrus or cream—think apricot tart, lemon panna cotta, crème brûlée or a classic fruit-based pavlova. It also shines with blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Gorgonzola dolce, and with aged hard cheeses where the sweetness and acidity cut through salt and richness. For a more minimalist pairing, serve it with foie gras, pâté or simply a plate of dried fruits and roasted nuts. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10 °C in small white wine or dessert wine glasses, allowing it to warm slightly in the glass to release its full aromatic range. Decanting is typically not necessary, but opening the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving and gently swirling in the glass will help the wine express its complexity.
Producer
Weingut Steininger is a family-run estate based in the picturesque wine village of Langenlois in Kamptal, one of Austria’s most celebrated wine regions. Led by Karl and Brigitte Steininger and now with daughter Eva taking a strong role on the commercial side, the estate has become well-known for precise, characterful wines made primarily from Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and other classic Austrian varieties, including Weissburgunder. Their vineyards climb the slopes behind Langenlois into the higher, cooler reaches where top-quality grapes thrive. Steininger is also highly regarded for its traditional-method Sekt, produced from many of the varieties they grow. In collaboration with neighbours, the family helped create the acclaimed Loisium wine museum and hotel complex, which showcases the region’s winemaking heritage in a network of underground cellars. This combination of deep local roots, dedication to quality and a forward-looking approach has made Weingut Steininger a respected name both within Kamptal and on the broader Austrian wine scene.
