Description
Sportoletti’s Villa Fidelia Rosso 2005 is a mature, Bordelais-inspired red from the hills of Umbria, crafted to stand alongside the great international blends. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc come together here in a rich, polished wine that has benefited from extended bottle age. This 2005 vintage, now beautifully evolved, captures both the warmth of central Italy and the finesse of a carefully managed, classic year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Villa Fidelia Rosso 2005 shows a deep garnet core with brick-hued reflections at the rim, a clear sign of its graceful evolution. The nose is complex and layered: blackcurrant, ripe cherry and plum are interwoven with violet notes, graphite, cedar, and a refined touch of vanilla and sweet spice from French oak. With time in the glass, nuances of tobacco leaf, leather and dried herbs emerge.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated yet remarkably silky, with a velvety texture and well-resolved tannins. Dark berry fruit is supported by lively, balancing acidity, giving the wine lift and definition despite its richness. Flavours of blackcurrant, dark cherry and blackberry mingle with hints of dark chocolate, espresso, licorice and a discreet mineral edge that speaks to its calcareous clay soils. The finish is long and persistent, with spice and subtle savory tones lingering. While this 2005 is fully into its drinking window and showing tertiary complexity, well-stored bottles still have the structure to hold and evolve for a few more years, though the emphasis is now on enjoyment rather than long-term cellaring.
Production
The grapes for Villa Fidelia Rosso are sourced from Sportoletti’s estate vineyards around Spello in Umbria, planted on well-drained calcareous and clay-rich soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. The region’s warm days and cooler nights in 2005, a stable and classically styled vintage, ensured slow, even ripening with excellent balance of fruit and acidity. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are harvested separately at optimal maturity, then vinified individually to preserve the character of each variety. After fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic conversion in barriques, followed by 12 months of aging in French oak (with a significant proportion of new barrels) to build structure and complexity. It is then bottled and rests for at least another year before release, allowing the components to integrate harmoniously.
Food & Serving
This mature Umbrian red is a natural match for rich, savory dishes such as roasted lamb, slow-braised beef, ossobuco, or venison with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-inflected pasta, mushroom risotto, aged pecorino and other hard cheeses. Serve at around 18°C, and for a 2005 vintage, decant gently 30–60 minutes before serving to help the wine open up and to separate any natural sediment. Use a large Bordeaux-style glass to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and evolved texture.
