Description

Sportoletti Villa Fidelia Rosso 1998 is a mature, classically styled Umbrian red that brings together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in a refined, Bordeaux-inspired blend. From one of Umbria’s most respected family producers, this vintage has had decades to evolve, offering complex tertiary notes and silky structure. For collectors and lovers of fully developed wines, this bottle is a rare chance to experience an Italian “super Umbrian” at peak maturity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1998 Villa Fidelia Rosso shows a deep garnet core with brick and tawny hues at the rim, a clear sign of its extended bottle age. Swirl the wine and you’ll find a finely layered bouquet: dried plum, black cherry compote and cassis are interwoven with notes of cedar box, tobacco leaf, leather, menthol and a subtle hint of graphite and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a velvety, resolved tannin structure and a gentle, integrated acidity that keeps it lively despite its age. Flavors echo the nose: mature dark fruit, dried fig and prune, along with savory tones of forest floor, cigar wrapper, cocoa and sweet spice from its time in oak. The finish is long, graceful and savory, tapering off with notes of dried roses and earthy minerality. At this stage, the 1998 is fully mature and should be enjoyed now; well-stored bottles can still offer several more years of pleasure, but this is very much a wine to drink rather than to hold for extended aging.

Production
Villa Fidelia Rosso is produced from vineyards in the gently rolling hills of Umbria near Spello and Assisi, where a mix of clay, limestone and well-drained soils allow Merlot (70%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Cabernet Franc (10%) to ripen with concentration yet retain freshness. The region’s continental climate—with warm days and cool nights—helps build aromatic complexity and structure in these Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and again at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve fruit purity and manage tannin extraction, followed by maturation in small French oak barriques, which lend subtle spice, toast and structure without overpowering the wine’s character. Extended bottle aging completes the profile, allowing tertiary notes and seamless integration of components to develop over time.

Food & Serving
This mature Umbrian red pairs beautifully with refined, savory dishes: think slow-braised beef, lamb shanks, osso buco, roast venison, or a classic bistecca alla fiorentina. It also works very well with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino or mature Comté, and with earthy dishes featuring porcini mushrooms or truffle. Serve at 17–18°C (62–64°F) to fully show its nuances. Given its age, decant gently for about 30–45 minutes to separate any sediment and allow the bouquet to unfurl, taking care not to over-aerate the wine.

Producer
The Sportoletti family winery, based near the historic town of Spello in Umbria, has built a strong reputation for producing characterful, terroir-driven wines that bridge local tradition and international style. Founded in the mid-20th century, the estate initially focused on farming and gradually evolved into a quality-driven wine producer, with a particular talent for Bordeaux blends adapted to Umbrian soils. Villa Fidelia Rosso is their flagship red, often cited as one of Umbria’s benchmark “super Umbrian” wines, earning critical acclaim for its depth, elegance and aging potential. Through meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful use of French oak, Sportoletti has become a respected name in central Italy, helping to elevate Umbria’s profile on the international fine wine stage.
