Spier, 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2023

Spier 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2023 is a flagship South African white that combines old-vine concentration with the finesse of careful oak maturation. Named after Spier’s remarkable collection of 21 preserved Cape Dutch gables, it reflects both the estate’s heritage and its focus on premium wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a bright, polished appearance, with a layered aromatic profile of ripe stone fruit, citrus peel, and subtle floral notes, lifted by gentle oak spice. On the palate, it is broad and concentrated, with Chenin Blanc’s natural freshness balanced by creamy texture, depth, and a long, refined finish. Thanks to fruit from more than 40-year-old vines and 14 months of maturation in French oak, including a high proportion of new barrels, this wine has impressive complexity and the structure to develop further in bottle over the next few years.

Production
The grapes come from mature Chenin Blanc vines over 40 years old in Stellenbosch, where the combination of sun, coastal influence, and well-drained soils helps produce low yields and highly concentrated fruit. Fermentation takes place in 400-liter oak barrels, followed by 14 months of ageing on the same French oak casks, with around three-quarters new oak, adding subtle texture and nuance without overpowering the wine’s fruit depth.

Food & Serving
Ideal with roast chicken, creamy seafood dishes, grilled fish, or richer vegetarian plates such as risotto with mushrooms or butternut squash. Serve slightly chilled at 10–12°C, and decanting is not necessary, though a little time in the glass will help the wine раскры its aromatic complexity.
