Description

Sordo Giovanni Barolo Monvigliero 2016 comes from one of Verduno’s most revered vineyards, often spoken of in hushed, ‘grand cru’ tones by Barolo insiders. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, this is a Barolo that combines finesse, perfume and precision with the depth and structure expected from the outstanding 2016 vintage. It’s a bottle for those who appreciate classic, terroir-driven Barolo with a distinctive, elegant personality.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Sordo Barolo Monvigliero 2016 shows a luminous garnet core with brick reflections toward the rim, typical of top Nebbiolo. The nose is finely etched and intensely aromatic: rose petals, dried violets and lavender lead the way, followed by red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate, layered with notes of sweet spices, licorice, tobacco leaf and a subtle balsamic, herbal edge that is a hallmark of Monvigliero. On the palate, the wine is refined rather than massive, with a silken texture wrapped around a precise, vertical structure. Lively red fruits, blood orange and cranberry are framed by savory hints of tea leaf, truffle, anise and cedar. The tannins are firm but very fine-grained, already well integrated yet clearly capable of long development. Acidity is vibrant, giving lift and freshness to the long, persistent finish. This 2016 has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully from now with proper aeration, but will reward patience over the next 10–20 years as its aromatics grow more complex and tertiary.

Production
Monvigliero is one of the most celebrated crus of Verduno, perched on well-exposed hillsides with a special microclimate and predominantly calcareous marl soils that give Nebbiolo its trademark perfume and finesse. Sordo Giovanni farms these vineyards traditionally, with careful work in the rows and selective hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are brought to the cellar. Vinification follows classic Barolo methods: extended maceration on the skins to extract aromatics, color and tannin, followed by a long, patient maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the cru character of Monvigliero and the purity of the 2016 vintage to emerge without excessive wood influence.

Food & Serving
This Barolo’s elegance and aromatic lift make it an excellent match for refined, savory dishes: think truffle risotto, tajarin pasta with butter and sage, braised veal shank, roasted game birds, mushroom-based dishes, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to let the bouquet fully open. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth, especially for the 2016 vintage, to soften the tannins and unlock the wine’s full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Sordo Giovanni is a historic, family-run estate rooted in the heart of the Langhe, with a long tradition of crafting classic, vineyard-designated Barolo. Over generations, the Sordo family has assembled an enviable collection of top crus, including Monvigliero in Verduno, cementing their reputation as specialists in expressing the nuances of Barolo’s terroirs. Known for their traditional approach—extended macerations, large neutral oak and patient aging—they produce wines that are benchmarks for authenticity and regional character, highly regarded by Barolo enthusiasts and collectors seeking honest, ageworthy expressions of Piemonte.
