Description

Sordo Giovanni Barolo Monprivato 2019 comes from one of Barolo’s most revered crus, the Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. This is a classic, traditional-style Barolo that showcases Nebbiolo’s finesse, structure, and haunting aromatics with impressive clarity. Produced in limited quantities, it offers a refined expression of one of Piemonte’s most celebrated terroirs and promises both immediate charm and long-term aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Monprivato shows a luminous, transparent garnet core with brick-red highlights at the rim, typical of well-crafted Nebbiolo. The nose is lifted and complex, offering notes of wild cherry, dried rose petals, violet, and blood orange, wrapped in undertones of liquorice, tar, and subtle spice. On the palate, this Barolo is elegant yet firmly structured, with fine, chalky tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. Flavours of red cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate are layered with hints of leather, dried herbs, and a gentle savoury earthiness that reflects its prestigious origin in Castiglione Falletto. The finish is long, precise, and mineral-driven, suggesting excellent capacity to develop further complexity over 10–20 years in a good cellar.

Production
Monprivato is a small, south- to south-west–facing cru in the commune of Castiglione Falletto, regarded as one of the most important and historic sites in the entire Barolo area. The vineyard’s calcareous clay and marl soils, coupled with the cool yet sunny Piemontese climate, give Nebbiolo its hallmark perfume and structure. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, Sordo Giovanni follows a traditional Barolo approach: extended maceration on the skins and fermentation in stainless steel or concrete, followed by long maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the wine’s terroir to shine without excessive influence from new wood.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, game (venison, hare), and slow-cooked lamb, as well as truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C to highlight its aromatics and texture. For optimal enjoyment, decant 1–2 hours before serving in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; older bottles can be decanted more gently just to remove sediment.

Producer
Sordo Giovanni is a historic family-run estate in Piemonte, known for its deep roots in traditional Barolo production and its impressive collection of single-vineyard bottlings. Based in the heart of the Langhe, the winery has built its reputation on expressing the unique character of each cru, including prestigious sites such as Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto. With a philosophy centred on classic methods, long cask aging, and respect for Nebbiolo’s natural elegance, Sordo Giovanni has become a respected name both locally and among Barolo enthusiasts worldwide, contributing to the region’s standing as one of Italy’s premier fine-wine appellations.
