Description
Smith Haut Lafitte 2020 is a powerful yet poised red from one of Pessac-Léognan’s benchmark estates, showcasing the structure and depth of this excellent Bordeaux vintage. More introspective and firmly built than the charming 2019, it slowly unfurls in the glass with layers of dark fruit, florals and fine oak spice. This is a quintessential grand vin de Bordeaux: classical in style, deeply rooted in its gravelly terroir, and crafted for those who appreciate wines that reward patience and cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Smith Haut Lafitte 2020 presents a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is initially reserved but quickly opens to reveal pure blackcurrant and ripe plum alongside notes of graphite, iris and violet, with a lifted minty freshness and a discreet frame of fine-grained, toasty French oak.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, with a velvety but firmly structured texture. Ripe black fruits—cassis, blackberry and black plum—are woven together with hints of cedar, pencil shavings, cocoa and a cool, fresh herbal nuance. The mid-palate feels multidimensional and assured, carried by rich, finely extracted tannins that assert themselves on a long, youthful and slightly firm finish. Acidity is vibrant but integrated, giving the wine precision and drive. This vintage has excellent aging potential: it will start to show its best after 7–10 years in bottle, and should continue to evolve gracefully for 20+ years in a good cellar.
Production
Château Smith Haut Lafitte lies on some of Pessac-Léognan’s most prized terroir, a deep bed of Garonne gravel over sand and clay that naturally limits yields and provides superb drainage, encouraging grapes of great intensity and aromatic finesse. The 2020 red is typically a classic Left Bank blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all sourced from organically and biodynamically farmed vines. Grapes are harvested by hand in small crates at optimal ripeness, then rigorously sorted to retain only pristine fruit. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats (including wooden vats for selected parcels), with careful extraction to achieve density without harshness. The wine is then aged, typically around 18 months, in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where it gains additional complexity, polish and structure while preserving the clarity of its fruit and the signature graphite-mineral character of its gravelly soils.
Food & Serving
This structured and refined Bordeaux is a natural partner for classic, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison, and game birds like pigeon or duck. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom-based sauces, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its balance of fruit, tannin and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to help the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it matures, a gentle 30–60 minute decant will be enough to reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Château Smith Haut Lafitte, located in Martillac in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, is one of the region’s most respected and dynamic estates. With origins dating back to the 14th century and a reputation for quality solidified in the 18th and 19th centuries, the property has been elevated to new heights under the ownership of Florence and Daniel Cathiard since the early 1990s. Their focus on precision viticulture, organic and biodynamic practices, and meticulous cellar work has placed Smith Haut Lafitte firmly among the elite producers of Graves, renowned for both its reds and whites. The estate is celebrated for its commitment to environmental stewardship, its strikingly consistent quality across vintages, and its wines’ ability to combine power, elegance and a strong sense of place.
