Description
Sine Qua Non’s 2008 Syrah Labels is one of those rare Californian cult wines that captures both sheer power and remarkable finesse. Sourced from some of the region’s most sought-after sites, this Rhône-inspired blend showcases Manfred Krankl’s unmistakable, highly sought-after style and the extreme scarcity that has made SQN a modern legend.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an opaque purple core, hinting at its depth and concentration. The nose is intensely layered, with aromas of charcoal, acacia flowers, blueberries, blackberries, graphite, and a subtle smoky nuance that adds complexity and lift.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerfully textured, with great fruit density wrapped in a polished, seamless frame. The Syrah is supported by Grenache and a touch of Viognier, which bring extra perfume and nuance. While already impressive, this is a wine with excellent aging potential and should continue to evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years.
Production
This cuvée is composed of 89% Syrah, 7% Grenache, and 4% Viognier, drawing fruit from the 11 Confessions Estate Vineyard, the Cumulus home estate vineyard in Oak View, and purchased grapes from White Hawk Vineyard in Los Alamos and Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria. The combination of these sites gives the wine both richness and aromatic complexity, shaped by California’s warm, sun-filled climate and Santa Barbara’s distinctive Rhône-friendly growing conditions. Vinification follows Sine Qua Non’s hands-on, highly selective approach, with an emphasis on expressing the character of the fruit rather than adhering to a rigid production formula.
Food & Serving
This Syrah is an excellent match for slow-roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, venison, duck breast, or rich dishes with herbs and dark sauces. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses and earthy mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open.
Producer
Sine Qua Non, founded by Austrian-born winemaker Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, has become one of California’s most celebrated cult wineries. Since its first release in 1994, the estate has built a reputation for tiny production, meticulous craftsmanship, and highly distinctive Rhône-style wines that are deeply sought after around the world. Robert Parker’s early praise helped cement SQN’s status, and today the winery remains a benchmark for expressive, collectible California Syrah and Rhône blends.
