Description
Sine Qua Non’s 2018 Grenache Eleven Confessions Vineyard is a striking, small-production red that showcases the house’s signature precision and opulence. Crafted from a meticulous barrel selection and aged for over three years in French oak, it is both powerful and finely detailed, with an almost Burgundian sense of energy despite its Californian richness. As a cult icon from one of California’s most sought-after producers, this bottling captures the singular personality of the Eleven Confessions Vineyard in a standout vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Eleven Confessions Grenache shows a deep ruby-purple hue, dense at the core with a vibrant rim that hints at its freshness and youth. The nose unfolds slowly and seductively: dark cherries and morello cherries intertwined with roasted coffee bean, black licorice, dried thyme, tea leaves and damp forest floor, all framed by subtle spice from its extended élevage in French oak.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and concentrated yet remarkably alive, with bursts of juicy, mouthwatering acidity that keep the wine lifted. Layers of dark and red berry fruit are wrapped in fine, grainy tannins that give structure without harshness. Hints of cocoa, espresso, savory herbs and floral tones emerge with air, and the finish fans out into a long, kaleidoscopic aftertaste of spice and flowers. Still youthful and tightly coiled, it will benefit from additional time in bottle; expect an optimal drinking window stretching comfortably over 15–20+ years from vintage, evolving greater complexity and tertiary nuances with patience.
Production
Sourced from the estate Eleven Confessions Vineyard in California’s Central Coast, this wine reflects a cool, coastal-influenced terroir with well-drained soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The blend is 83.7% Grenache, 9.1% Syrah, 6% Petite Sirah and 1.2% Viognier, with approximately 45% whole clusters used during fermentation to build aromatic complexity and structural finesse. After a careful, likely hand-harvested selection of bunches, the grapes are vinified with great attention to detail, then matured for about 38 months in French oak (52% new barrels and demi-muids). This extended, mostly small-lot élevage allows the components to knit together slowly, polishing the tannins and integrating oak nuances without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Grenache-based wine that shines alongside richly flavored, savory dishes: think herb-crusted lamb, slow-braised short ribs, roasted duck with cherries, game birds, or deeply flavored mushroom and truffle dishes. It can also pair beautifully with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie that can stand up to its intensity. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic complexity without emphasizing alcohol or oak. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours for younger bottles—to help the wine open and reveal its many layers; older bottles may need a gentler, shorter decant to preserve their more delicate tertiary notes.
Producer
Sine Qua Non, founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in California, has become one of the most revered and collectible names in the world of wine, renowned for its avant-garde labels and uncompromising craftsmanship. Based in the Central Coast and working primarily with Rhône varieties such as Syrah and Grenache, the estate helped redefine what these grapes could achieve in California, crafting wines of both hedonistic richness and remarkable detail. Their single-vineyard bottlings, like Eleven Confessions, are produced in extremely limited quantities and routinely earn top critical acclaim, cementing Sine Qua Non’s status as a benchmark producer and a cult reference point for Grenache and Syrah globally.
