Tasting Notes
Deep, nearly opaque purple in the glass, this 2019 Magnum immediately signals concentration and richness. The nose is highly expressive, opening with dark plum, blackcurrant tart, cassis, and anise, then unfolding into layers of nutmeg and rose petals. On the palate, it mirrors the dark plum and blueberry tones from the aroma, adding pomegranate, licorice, crushed stone, tobacco, sage, and subtle smoky notes. The texture is immense yet polished, with a finish that seems to go on and on. Built for the long haul, it has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully for 30–40 years.

Production
Hillside Select is sourced from 14 small parcels planted on the slopes surrounding Shafer’s vineyard in Napa Valley, where the hillside sites bring natural concentration, structure, and freshness. The 2019 vintage was vinified by winemaker Elias Fernandez and matured for 32 months in 100% new French oak barrels, a regimen that adds layers of spice, texture, and age-worthy complexity without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for equally impressive dishes such as prime rib, dry-aged steak, lamb rack, venison, or rich braised short ribs. It also works beautifully with truffle-infused dishes or mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for several hours if drinking young to help the wine open fully.
