Sourced from 14 small hillside parcels on the Shafer estate, it represents the pinnacle of the winery’s style and the wine that helped establish Shafer’s global reputation.

Tasting Notes
Deep, opaque ruby in the glass, it opens with a remarkably intense bouquet of dark plum, cassis, blackcurrant tart, anise, nutmeg, and rose petals. The palate is layered and powerful, showing ripe plum and blueberry alongside pomegranate, licorice, crushed stone, tobacco, sage, and a subtle smoky edge. The structure is grand and seamless, with immense concentration, polished tannins, and a finish that seems to go on forever. Approachable now in a large glass, but built for the long haul, with at least two decades of aging potential ahead and likely more in a strong cellar.

Production
Made entirely from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon harvested from 14 small hillside blocks at Shafer’s Napa Valley estate, the 2018 Hillside Select reflects the steep, rocky terroir that gives the wine its depth and tension. Winemaker Elias Fernandez aged the wine for 32 months in 100% new French oak, enhancing its complexity while preserving the vineyard’s dark-fruited, mineral-driven character.

Food & Serving
Best served with richly flavored dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, braised short ribs, lamb chops, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C and decant for at least 2 hours, or longer if opening in its youth, to allow the aromatics and structure to fully раскры.
