Description

Sergio Mottura Grechetto Poggio Della Costa 2011 is a refined Italian white wine that showcases just how serious Grechetto can be. Sourced from one of Lazio’s benchmark producers, this bottling combines vibrant Mediterranean character with the complexity that comes from over a decade of careful aging. It’s an excellent choice for those looking to explore distinctive, terroir-driven Italian whites beyond the classic regions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 Poggio Della Costa shows a deep straw to light golden hue, a clear sign of its maturity and concentration. The nose offers layered aromas of ripe stone fruit, dried apricot, yellow plum and baked apple, interwoven with notes of wild herbs, chamomile, acacia honey, toasted nuts and a gentle mineral edge. On the palate, this Grechetto is full and textured without ever losing its natural freshness. Flavors of peach, pear and citrus peel evolve into more tertiary notes of honey, almond, beeswax and a subtle saline finish, reflecting the volcanic and tufaceous soils of the area. The acidity is still lively, giving structure and lift, while the mid-palate has a pleasing, almost creamy weight. At this age, the wine is in a beautiful, evolved phase and should be enjoyed now or over the next few years, assuming good cellaring conditions.

Production
Poggio Della Costa comes from vineyards around Civitella d’Agliano in northern Lazio, an area marked by tufaceous and volcanic soils that give Grechetto both its mineral backbone and its distinctive savory character. Sergio Mottura is known for careful, low-yield viticulture, typically harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. While exact details vary by vintage, the wine is traditionally vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve aromatic purity, with time on the fine lees to build texture and complexity without masking the grape’s intrinsic freshness.

Food & Serving
This mature Grechetto pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as seared scallops, roasted monkfish, grilled prawns or seafood risotto, as well as classic Italian preparations like saltimbocca, roast chicken with herbs, or pasta with truffle or porcini mushrooms. It also works well with aged cheeses and nutty, hard cheeses. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance freshness and complexity. Given its age and concentration, a gentle decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic range.

Producer
Sergio Mottura is widely regarded as one of the great interpreters of Grechetto, often credited with elevating this indigenous grape to international recognition. Based in Civitella d’Agliano in Lazio, close to the Umbria border, the estate has long focused on sustainable, quality-driven viticulture, with a special emphasis on local varieties and expressing the character of its volcanic soils. Over the years, Mottura’s whites—especially Poggio Della Costa—have become reference points for the region, frequently praised by critics and sommeliers for their purity, structure and ability to age gracefully.
