Description
Sepp Moser Riesling Ried Ganstreiberin Kremstal Reserve 2018 is a precise, characterful Austrian Riesling from one of Lower Austria’s most respected biodynamic estates. Crafted from a single, classified vineyard site, it captures the tension between ripe fruit and crystal-clear acidity that defines top Kremstal Riesling. This Reserve bottling highlights both the power of the warm 2018 vintage and the finesse that has made Sepp Moser a benchmark name in Austrian wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a bright, pale lemon-gold hue with a subtle green shimmer, hinting at both ripeness and freshness. The nose opens with expressive aromas of ripe peach, apricot and juicy lime, layered with white blossoms, wet stone, and a touch of herbaceous lift—think lemon balm and a whisper of fennel seed. With air, more complexity emerges: delicate notes of honeycomb and flint add depth without weighing the wine down.
On the palate, this is dry, focused and elegant, with a firm spine of acidity that balances the generosity of the 2018 vintage. Flavours of stone fruit, yellow apple and citrus zest are intertwined with saline minerality and a lightly spicy, almost peppery edge typical of top Kremstal sites. The mid-palate is concentrated yet never heavy, finishing long, linear and mouthwatering with lingering notes of lime peel and crushed stone. While already approachable, this Reserve Riesling has the structure and extract to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, developing more honeyed, smoky and petrol nuances over time.
Production
Ried Ganstreiberin is a single vineyard in the Kremstal region of Lower Austria, characterized by well-drained primary rock and loess soils that give Riesling its finely etched minerality and tension. The vines are farmed organically and biodynamically, with low yields and meticulous handwork throughout the growing season to ensure optimal ripeness and grape health. Harvest is typically carried out by hand in several passes to select only perfectly ripe clusters, preserving acidity and aromatic precision. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation takes place with careful temperature control, usually in stainless steel and large, neutral casks to protect the purity of the fruit. The wine is then left on its fine lees for an extended period to add texture and complexity before bottling as a Kremstal Reserve, with minimal intervention to let the vineyard speak clearly.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a natural partner for refined, aromatic cuisine. It pairs beautifully with freshwater fish (trout, pike-perch, char), sushi and sashimi, or shellfish such as scallops, prawns and mussels. Its vibrant acidity and mineral core make it excellent with Asian-inspired dishes—think Thai or Vietnamese preparations with lemongrass, ginger and lime—as well as classic Austrian fare like Wiener Schnitzel with lemon, or roasted poultry with fresh herbs. Serve chilled but not icy, ideally at 9–11 °C, to allow the aromas to fully open. Decanting for 20–30 minutes, especially in its youth, can help the wine unfold its layers and highlight the interplay between fruit and minerality.
Producer
The Sepp Moser estate, founded by the legendary Austrian vintner Sepp Moser and now run by his son Nikolaus, is one of the pioneers of quality-focused, biodynamic viticulture in Austria. Based in Lower Austria with key holdings in Kremstal, the family has been instrumental in raising the international profile of Austrian wines through meticulous vineyard work and a clear, terroir-driven style. The estate converted to organic farming in the early 2000s and later to full biodynamic practices, earning Demeter certification and becoming a reference point for sustainable, high-quality winegrowing in the region. Their Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners from classified single vineyards—such as Ried Ganstreiberin—regularly earn high critical acclaim and are regarded as benchmarks for precision, minerality and ageworthiness in Austrian white wine.
