Description

Seckinger Riesling Deidesheim Petershöhle Bio 2021 is a finely etched, organically farmed single-vineyard Riesling from the cool, forest-fringed slopes above Deidesheim in the Pfalz. Crafted by the Seckinger brothers from steep, terraced parcels painstakingly brought back to life by their father over the last three decades, it’s a wine that combines razor-sharp precision with understated elegance. This vintage shows a more delicate, quiet expression of the Petershöhle site, highlighting its mineral core and refined acidity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling presents a pale lemon hue with green reflections, signaling its youth and lively freshness. The nose is immediately more subtle and filigreed than its predecessor, with gentle notes of lime zest, green apple and white peach intertwined with cool herbal nuances, white flowers and a whisper of crushed stone. The formerly more pronounced earthy tones are now pushed into the background, adding faint depth rather than dominating the bouquet. On the palate, the wine is bone-dry, linear and tightly wound, driven by the naturally high acidity that Petershöhle is known for. Citrus and orchard fruits lead—think lemon peel, grapefruit pith and barely ripe pear—supported by a firm, saline minerality and a hint of savory, herbal spice from the extended skin contact. The texture is precise and finely grippy rather than opulent, with a long, focused finish that leaves a refreshing, mouthwatering tension. Thanks to its elevated acidity and mineral backbone, this 2021 has excellent aging potential; expect it to gain in complexity, depth and aromatic breadth over the next 6–10 years, developing more smokiness, honeyed notes and subtle petrol tones with time in bottle.

Production
The Deidesheim Petershöhle vineyard lies on old, narrow terraces at the edge of the forest, where a cooler mesoclimate and constant air flow slow ripening and preserve acidity. The soils are dominated by poor, red Buntsandstein (colored sandstone), which naturally restricts yields and imparts a firm, stony minerality and tension to the wines. Farmed organically (Bio) by the Seckinger family, the vines are tended by hand due to the steep, hard-to-access terraces, with low yields and selective hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. In this cooler 2021 vintage, the must’s high natural acidity allowed the brothers to work with minimal sulfur additions, but also required a several-day maceration on the skins to balance and “round” the acidity while extracting subtle phenolics and aromatic complexity. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the wine is matured with a light touch—often in stainless steel and/or neutral large oak—so that the character of Petershöhle’s cool climate and red sandstone terroir remains front and center.

Food & Serving
This taut, mineral Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, particularly with dishes that appreciate bright acidity and precision. It shines alongside delicately prepared seafood—such as poached white fish, ceviche, sashimi or marinated shellfish—as well as lightly spiced Asian cuisine, sushi, and Vietnamese or Thai dishes with citrus, fresh herbs and ginger. Classic pairings include grilled trout with herbs, smoked or cured fish, asparagus with vinaigrette, and young goat or fresh cheeses. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C to emphasize its linear freshness; as it warms slightly in the glass, more nuance will emerge. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a short splash into a carafe 15–30 minutes before serving can help open up the aromatics, especially in the wine’s first few years.

Producer
Weingut Seckinger is a rising star in the Pfalz, run by the three Seckinger brothers—Jonas, Lukas and Philipp—who have rapidly built a reputation for precise, terroir-driven and organic wines. Their family has been working the vineyards around Deidesheim for decades, with their father playing a key role in reviving the once-neglected Petershöhle terraces some 30 years ago. Today, the estate focuses on expressing the nuanced differences of their sites—particularly those on limestone and red Buntsandstein—through low-intervention, organically farmed viticulture and careful cellar work that leans on indigenous yeasts and minimal additives. In a region with many historic names, Seckinger stands out as part of the new guard: producers who are pushing Pfalz Riesling and other varieties toward a more transparent, finely structured and site-specific style, garnering increasing attention from sommeliers and wine critics across Europe.
