Description
Seckinger Riesling Deidesheim Kieselberg Wurzelecht Bio 2022 is a rare, characterful Riesling from own-rooted vines in one of Deidesheim’s most esteemed sites. Crafted by the up‑and‑coming Seckinger brothers in the Pfalz, this wine combines organic farming, old-vine intensity, and a striking sense of place. For lovers of terroir-driven whites, it offers a glimpse of Riesling as it tasted before the era of widespread grafting.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Kieselberg Wurzelecht shows a pale straw to light lemon color with green highlights, reflecting its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is precise and mineral-driven, with notes of lime zest, green apple, and white peach layered over crushed rock, wet slate, and delicate herbal nuances. Subtle hints of citrus blossom and flint add complexity as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this Riesling is tensile and focused, with a vibrant line of acidity that carries citrus and stone-fruit flavors through a long, saline finish. Expect juicy lime, grapefruit pith, underripe nectarine, and a clear, stony backbone that feels very much tied to its Kieselberg origins. The structure is dry (trocken in style) yet not austere, with a fine phenolic grip that adds texture without heaviness. While already enjoyable in its youth for its purity and precision, this wine has solid aging potential; over the next 6–10 years it should gain more complexity, revealing deeper smoky-mineral tones and a rounded, honeyed nuance while retaining its backbone.
Production
The grapes come from the Deidesheimer Kieselberg vineyard in the Pfalz, a site renowned for its stony, gravelly and sandy soils ("Kiesel" meaning pebbles), excellent drainage, and sun exposure that allows Riesling to ripen slowly and evenly. The vines here are wurzelecht—own-rooted rather than grafted—an extreme rarity in Europe since the phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century, and they are farmed organically (Bio) with a strong focus on biodiversity and low intervention in the vineyard. Harvest is done by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, perfectly ripe grapes. In the cellar, Weingut Seckinger follows a minimal-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and élevage on the fine lees in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak to preserve clarity, tension, and the vineyard’s unmistakable mineral signature, with only modest sulfuring at bottling.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is an excellent match for refined, aromatic cuisine and dishes that appreciate high acidity and minerality. Try it with ceviche, oysters, or sashimi, as well as shellfish like shrimp, crab, or scallops. It also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian dishes (Vietnamese, Japanese, or Thai with citrus and herbs), grilled freshwater fish, and vegetable‑focused plates such as asparagus, fennel, or cauliflower with citrus and herbs. Creamy goat’s cheese or young, tangy soft cheeses are also natural partners. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), to allow the aromatics to unfold. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes in youth can help the wine open up and better express its subtle herbal and mineral nuances.
Producer
Weingut Seckinger is a dynamic, quality‑driven family estate in the Pfalz, run by the Seckinger brothers, who have quickly gained a reputation for their precise, terroir‑focused wines and commitment to organic and low‑intervention practices. Working primarily in and around Deidesheim, they champion distinctive single-vineyard bottlings that showcase the region’s varied soils, from sandstone to gravelly and limestone-rich parcels. Their work with wurzelechte (own‑rooted) vines is particularly noteworthy, preserving a historical style of viticulture that largely vanished after phylloxera. In a relatively short time, Seckinger has become one of the most talked‑about new names in the Pfalz, recognized by critics and sommeliers alike for producing expressive, characterful Rieslings and other varieties that punch well above their price and stand confidently alongside more established regional icons.
