Description
Schola Sarmenti Primitivo Lianto 2023 is a warmly expressive red from the sun‑drenched heel of Italy, crafted to showcase the generous character of Primitivo in a seductive, approachable style. Drawing on old vines and traditional methods, it balances ripe southern Italian fruit with a surprising freshness and drinkability. Lianto has become a modern classic in Puglia, offering a glimpse into the region’s long-standing love affair with this powerful yet charming grape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lianto 2023 presents a deep, ruby-red core with violet highlights, hinting at youth and intensity. The nose is immediately inviting, with ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry layered over sweet spices, cocoa, a touch of licorice, and subtle notes of dried Mediterranean herbs.
On the palate, the wine is generous and smooth, with plush dark fruit wrapped in soft tannins and a velvety texture. Flavors of black cherry compote, ripe plum, blackcurrant and a hint of fig are lifted by notes of vanilla, clove and a gentle, warming spice on the finish. A well-judged acidity keeps it from feeling heavy, making it both comforting and easy to drink. While designed for immediate pleasure over the next few years, Lianto 2023 will continue to evolve gracefully for 3–5 years, gaining a bit more softness and complexity.
Production
Schola Sarmenti sources Primitivo for Lianto from vineyards in Salento, Puglia, where vines benefit from intense Mediterranean sunshine, cooling sea breezes and limestone-clay soils that help preserve freshness and concentration. Many of the vines are trained in traditional bush (alberello) form, naturally limiting yields and increasing flavor intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to protect the fruit and allow careful selection. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to capture vibrant fruit character, followed by maturation in a combination of stainless steel and (often used) oak, aiming to soften the tannins and add subtle spice without overshadowing Primitivo’s generous, fruit-driven personality.
Food & Serving
Schola Sarmenti Primitivo Lianto 2023 is a natural partner for hearty, flavorful dishes such as grilled lamb chops, slow-cooked ragù with pasta, wood-fired pizza with spicy sausage, or rich tomato-based stews. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses, charcuterie and barbecue-glazed meats. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both its fruit and structure; in warmer weather, a very light chill can be refreshing. Decanting for 20–30 minutes helps the aromas open up and smooths the palate, especially in the wine’s first couple of years.
Producer
Schola Sarmenti is an ambitious, quality-focused winery based in Nardò, in the heart of Salento, Puglia. Founded with the goal of preserving and elevating the region’s native varieties—especially Primitivo and Negroamaro—the estate has become known for rescuing and working with old, low-yielding bush vines that might otherwise have been lost. By combining meticulous vineyard work with modern, precise winemaking, Schola Sarmenti has helped redefine Puglia’s reputation from a bulk-wine supplier to a source of characterful, premium wines. Their bottlings, including Lianto, are regularly praised for delivering authentic regional character with polish, balance and real sense of place.
